Although the serial number might tell the story it is usually only good to their tech support. The model number is usually on the same plate as the serial number is. The BIOS splash screen (seen during boot up) might give you a clue as well.

My step daughter brought home 2 compaq computors yesterday amd I am trying to find out info on them. The only label on the machine only read compaq. The serieral number is 6b19kf83a048. They both have win 98se imstalled and boot to windows. I would like to know if anyone would be able to ID the model. They have 2gb hard drives and 128mb ram and I think an celeron processors. I do not think they are worth much but I like to tinker with older machines just for fun. Any help would be greatly welcomed. I have googled to try to find out what I am able but seems that I need to know the model to do much good.Thanks
