Compaq 7400 power problems

Laptop sometimes powers on and after windows starts loading it shuts off. Sometimes it will load the windows completely before shutting back down. It seemed to function on battery power but not on ac power. Thw battery is too low to power it back up. I have two of these units and the batteries do not seem to dharge on either unit. I recently installed Win 2000 on both units. The 7400 with the power problem has both WinME and 2000 on it. The battery seemed to charge when ME was being used but WIN 2000 does not seem to recharge the bats. Maybe that is mere coincidence. The problem unit has been left on for days at a time sometimes for a week. Also can i install Win98 on a machine that has Win 2000 without cleaning the drive?

How old are the batteries? After 2 years, nothing is assured and I have run into fried power supplies when a failed battery was left in and the laptop kept trying to charge it and ... eventually the circuits failed resulting in a new motherboard...

Tell more but I doubt software will solve this.
