comp.locks up during games

May 29, 2005 1:17PM PDT

My comp. started to lock up(have to shut off power) while playing games, usually within first couple minutes. I just recently loaded service pack 2 for XP. Could this be causing problem. I cant use system restore to go back. I waited a couple of weeks after installing the service pack 2 and everything seemed ok I didn't realize I hadn't tried any games so the system restore is cleaned up after the service pack 2 install. Any way to remove it? I read somewhere to reboot with XP CD in,with instuctions on how to get to the "recovery console" but my comp. just starts up normally when the XP CD is in.
The comp locks up when starting to play games(medal of honor, command and conquer etc,)No other programs seem to be affected. These games all worked fine before. All the fans(4,processor,pwr supply, case & video card) are running
Comp. info:
Pent. IV 2.0ghz, 1024 mb ram 128 mb g-force nvidia video card 60 g.b. hard drive (84% free space) windows XP SERVICE PACK 2.

You can remove SP2
May 29, 2005 6:29PM PDT

from add/remove programs - but that is a step backwards and is just avoiding the issue and may cause other issues - after all it may not be due to SP2.
Have you tried to reinstall the games or go to the games forums and asked any of the other people if anyone has had the same problem - there are a few patches out for a few games after SP2 so look for those as well.
By the way - to boot to your CD you need to change the sequence in the bios. - Also, from memory, SP2 deletes all restore points.

Before you rush

Have you updated all your drivers eg mobo, graphics, sound, etc, etc. As well as looking for patches as I recommended. You are just going to create more possible problems by uninstalling SP2.
If you still going to do it then just click on a "remove" in the add/remove window and you will see a link to Microsoft site - best to read this first.

I too have Medal of Honor, and it did lock on me at times, as well. Have you got MOH: Breakthrough and MOH: Spearhead? If you have, try going to FilePlanet and getting the patches, there's a UK/US multiplayer patch for MOHAA - though I think there's some single player content in there as well, There are 2 patches for Spearhead, up to 2.11 and from 2.11 2.15, then for Breakthrough there's another patch up to 2.40.

Load the games in this order, MOHAA, patch with 1.11; Spearhead, patch with up to 2.11 then 2.11 to 2.15; Breakthrough, then patch with 2.40.

SP2 is definitely NOT the cause of the problem, I have it and have no problem playing Medal of Honor, and as far as I've been able to find out, it's something to do with the patches (or lack of them)

still no luck
May 31, 2005 10:53AM PDT

Computer still locking up, have tried the following, down- load and re-install DirectX 9.0c; uninstall and re-install Medal of Honor, patched MOH,(1.11)Removed Service Pack 2(it removed ok, no lock-ups on restart) and re-did all of the above, Still no luck.

Some other info: Games(MOH, Command and Conquer, Call of Duty, etc.) are the only things locking up, either from CDRW or DVD drives. They install fine and start OK, (MOH locks up at the ''Maproom'' where you select play game, watch movie, credits, select options, etc. In fact, you can ''watch it lock up'', the fan on the wall in the ''maproom'' is spinning, and then it slows down and then stops.)

Able to watch movies on the DVD, no problem. Can play the games(pinball, etc) that came with XP, no problem.

All of these games worked before, in fact I have played the MOH series twice.

I haven't noticed any other problems with any other programs, connecting to the internet, etc.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Internet games

1/ Try this patch:-
KB893066 limits the number of TCP/IP connections to 10 (used to be 50) - There have been reports that this slows down connection and problems with (multiple) web pages being loaded - There is a patch see "step 8" of this link for the explanation and patch
http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=tools#4226patch

2/ Try and make an image file of the program disk and run the game from a virtual CDROM program
3/ Download the latest drivers and firmware for your DVD and CDROM players
4/ Download this program from Nero and see if your CD players are functioning OK
ftp://ftp6.nero.com/infotools.zip
5/ Email the game manufacturer explaining what you have told us - you may find they are aware of the problem and are working on a fix. Did you go to the games forum page and ask any one there????????
6/ Download the latest ASPI drivers from htpp://www.adaptec.com - although I think I read somewhere that XP per say doesn't use the "adaptec" CDROM protocol anymore - but maybe your games program does.
7/ Have a look in the "event viewer" in "admin tools" for any associated error - look in the System" and "programs" folders and follow links to online "help and support"

Let us know how you go - still think its the game which has the problem and that a patch is on the way.

still looking
May 31, 2005 7:30PM PDT

First off I'm not trying to play on the internet, just trying to play at home.
I have the latest driver for the CDRW, Will see about the DVD
The Nero program at ftp://ftp6.nero.com/infotools.zip comes up "Cannot Find Server"

The games all used to work fine prior to Service pack 2 install, I am now back to Service Pack 1 and still locking up, also what games forum page, is it on Cnet, can't find a listing under "all forums" for games.

Will look in the event viewer for errors

Thanks

infotool

sorry was
ftp://ftp6.nero.com/infotool.zip

If you have Nero you should have the above anyway - it will be called Nero toolkit.

When I said games forum - i didn't mean at CNET, I meant the home page of the games themselves or perhaps the "unofficial" home page - most usually have forums. Do a google search!

Also, any of the games I have that I play on a regular basis, I load into a virtual CDROM on my hard disk - they run much faster this way. If you have Nero its called the "image drive" - if your games CD is copy protected it is still possible but thats another story for later!.

One other thing of importance - make sure you have your CDROM DMA enabled - there is a bug in the system - you need to unset it, reboot and then reset it, and reboot again - you can find the DMA setting in device manager.

Just read all your posts again

1/ You haven't said anything about the "even viewer" - this may give us clue as to why the games are locking up.
2/ Just realised you said you have installed SP2 and STILL have the problems - that suggests that SP2 is not to blame - however it could have come about as a result of installing SP2 ie some systems setting were changed - I would also recommend you reinstall SP2 so this doesn't happen again if this is the cause.
3/ First, download the latest driver from Nvidia from here:- http://download.nvidia.com/Windows/71.89/71.89_win2kxp_english.exe - then having installed the driver/software I would check your graphic card settings - its best to have them set to defaults - make sure antialiasing is set to "application controlled".
4/ Next check that you have the correct monitor driver install and that in monitor setting it shows the name of your monitor and not "plug and Play" or "default" monitor - also make sure "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" is selected. Also try the "trouble shooting" tab in the advanced display setting ie turn off hardware acceleration.
5/ I once started having trouble with some games only to find the correct mouse driver wasn't installed!! - so make sure everything is OK with your mouse driver.
6/ There maybe another program running that is causing the problem such as a firewall or virus program so you could try stopping all background programs from running - to do this try selecting "diagnostic startup" in msconfig or download this program http://safsquad.com/Files/EndItAll2.zip

Let me know how you go
Peter
