Just do it when you want.

Anyway, since I am constantly downloading antivirus updates, spyware updates, plus programs I may try out, then uninstall, I think files may get spread out to parts of the HDD where they really don't need to be.
I do a through clean-up, and defrag once a month. JMO, and seems to work well for me.

It never hurts to defrag about once every week or so. You should also try defragging your system whenever it seems to be slowing down. Sometimes the fact that your data is all over the place is the only real problem. (You'd be surprised at how many people think they need a RAM upgrade!)
