Comcast Modem rental charge

Apr 12, 2011 8:09AM PDT

Investigating moving to Comcast from DSL with AT&T. they want to charge me $7 per month to rent the modem. Shouldn't I be able to just buy one and save over time? Is all I need a DOCSIS 3.0? What would the drawbacks be of owning my own. I'm betting that Comcast will always point to issues being related to my modem. Anything else?

Yes, you should be able to get one from amazon, best buy or such. And you got the spec right.

At 7 a month, only a year to pay off.

I've never leased . . .

I have Time Warner (Comcast by an other name). My first modem (DOCSIS 2) was a D-link DCM-202. Worked perfectly for many years, no issues with TW. I just purchased a Cisco DCP 3000. DOCSIS 3 and IPv6 ready, with Gigabit output. Totally pleased with it. I did have trouble with TW configuring their system to recognize it (semi-long story), but I finally found a tech named Fred who know what to do. Here is a screen shot of what I now get.
