Comcast connection problem

Jul 24, 2007 2:35PM PDT

I have been having trouble connecting my comcast internet to my girlfriends laptop. I unplugged my ethernet cable from my desktop and put it in the laptop as usual. Nothing worked, even tried using usb connection.

I called comcast and the lady was no help. Sent me through command prompt's ipconfig and ipconfig/renew which didn't work. Suddenly the phone disconnected and the internet connected. I want reconnect it to my desktop but fear that I wont be able to connect the laptop again.

Is there any way I can fix this if this occurs again and can I get the usb connection working?

Tried that, didn't work. I still can't wrap my head around why the connection suddenly worked last night and then wouldn't again. Tried doing ipconfig/release and /renew again but now it's saying it can't renew while the media is disconnected. I haven't disconnected my modem or anything since last night so I've got no clue what to do anymore. Please help me out, I need this laptop to connect.

media disconnected?

Could be your ethernet cable.
When you plug into the modem you should have some sort of light on the modem that indicates you have a connection (to your computer). The same is true of the ethernet port on your laptap/desktop.
When you first plug it in there is generally a light on the card itself, make sure it lights up.

Also, check to see that your network card is enabled.

You mentioned phone, so if you are using one device for both phone/internet make sure you have everything plugged into the right slots.

Yeah, everything is lit up and in the right slot. It's really driving me nuts, I'm racking my brain trying to get this to work.

try renistalling nic

alrighty then, try uninstalling and re-installing the nic on the laptop.

just uninstall it using xp's remove hardware..then reboot.

When it restarts it will "find" the network card and reinstall it for you. Power cycle your modem. After this you should be good to go.

as far as connecting usb goes...it's generally possible if you have a usb port on your modem, but it's not generally recommended.
