Resolved Question

colour calibration W7

May 6, 2014 10:42PM PDT

Hello,
Something driving me nuts with my Lenovo Z380 i5.
I'm not sure if it is coincidence but seemingly, since I have done several clone to external drive & reversed them using Apricorn, I seem to have a subtle but very annoying problem with colour.
I have read that laptop LCD's are famous for problems like this but I cannot remember it being so uncomfortable to my eyes to look at for any length of time as it is now.
I am currently having to go into Control Panel, Display, Colour Calibration etc every time I turn the machine on and eliminate all the Blue, reduce the red by about 30% and Green by about 15% ... to achieve a balance that is vaguely bearable.
The frustration comes when even going into Standby mode, seems to set these adjustments back to Default (maximum on all three).
The net result of that, after having had to spend so much time using the thing over the winter with exams and many different time consuming tasks, is that I am experiencing much more eye strain than ever noticed before. I am due to get a new prescription on my glasses but I don't feel that that is singularly responsible for the discomfort.
Is it possible that I have destabilised certain hidden settings within the display by several cloning exercises ?
Might it be any better by forgetting the cloned back ups and just re-installing from the home made Re-Install disks I created ?
Or am I just imagining it all and had the same colour and (Gamma ??) setting s as before ?
Sorry this is a bit vague but it is not so black & white as most other issues (haha)
Thanks in advance

Since you have backups
May 6, 2014 11:09PM PDT

Since you have backups, I would definitely try reinstalling the OS from scratch since you can revert back with little difficulty if it doesn't fix the problem. You could also try with a Linux LiveCD distribution to see if the problem persists.there. If yes, on either count, you probably are looking at needing a new LCD or possibly motherboard and/or CPU if the unit is using the IGP on the i5.

This sounds very much like a hardware issue, probably a bad cap somewhere not properly regulating power, but it's always best to rule out software issues first because it could be some strange driver corruption issue as well. So between a Linux LiveCD and restoring the unit to factory condition, if you're getting the same problem in both situations, it's definitely a hardware issue and I hope the unit is under warranty. Otherwise, you may as well start looking at new laptops when you see the repair quote.

Wow that was quick ...

Thanks Jimmy. No not under warranty I'm afraid but I will try to eliminate options as you suggest. I have never utilised a Linux Live CD nor have any idea how to create one but I expect that can be searched.
Might take me a while to deal with this but I will update in due course.
Thanks again. Excellent help as always here Happy

They're quite handy to have around

They're quite handy to have around for times when you need to isolate whether an issue is software or hardware. They have some other uses as well, so don't just toss it as soon as you figure out whether or not you've got a serious hardware issue with your laptop.

No worries there Jimmy, I don't discard anything of use, my wife will confirm that haha.
Looking forward to having the time to try this out.

further query
May 12, 2014 1:53AM PDT

Hello,

I moved all important data, gave the HDD a birthday in terms of using programs like Ccleaner, ATF cleaner, Windows Disk Cleaner & Piriform Defraggler, cleaned up and trimmed down disk the disk which was working fine, made an Apricorn Clone of the HDD... then wiped the drive with a "quick erase" Darik's and attempted to copy the Clone back, but it would not work stating that "Drive C could not be opened for exclusive access, Please close all other applications and files. Then click "Try again" In case exclusive access is till denied, try the Self Booting EZGig4"

I have cloned and copied several times before recently and never got this message before. I don't understand why it would deny me access this time. How do I get hold of the Self Booting EZGig4 ?

Anyway, the main issue of colour calibration, has yet to be determined thoroughly. I have Re-installed everything manually and updated until it would not any further but have so far omitted the two Graphics updates from Intel and NVidia to see if that makes any difference.

It is bright daylight in our conservatory at the moment so will judge it better tonight.

One key question:-
When changing the colour calibration using the sliders in W7 (mainly the blue as that seems to give the most eye strain) Why is it that the changes made are Never kept and each time the machine is restarted it reverts back to Full settings on all three colours ?

Even without restarting, if you go straight back into the settings after having adjusted them and even just letting the machine go into Standby, it often shows the settings as Full on again. What is the point of being able to change the settings if they do not stay where you put them ? Obviously I click through the options and "finish" at the end but it never stays how I put them for long.

Thanks

you formatted the original drive?
May 12, 2014 2:26AM PDT

Use the Linux CD, open GParted program, make sure you see the original hard drive displayed in it.

Delete the partitions on the drive till it's all unallocated space. I would then choose to format to "clear". You can then recreate the partitions, or just run your clone program in windows then on the drive and it should take the clone OK.

I will do that but
May 12, 2014 2:53AM PDT

I have tried at some length to investigate the best way to create a Linux Live CD but gave up as everything I looked at seemed to be obscure and unclear as to how best to continue. Any comprehensive advice in that direction would be very much appreciated.

Yes I DBAN'd the HDD, but just overwrote the existing clone on the external drive. I have used Dariks before with no problems. It was only to give a blank canvas in this case and did not expect it to cause any issues.

Many thanks

Insert blank DVD into drive
May 12, 2014 3:02AM PDT

Have the ISO file downloaded already. Open your CD Burning software. If you don't have anything other than Windows Data writing program, then download XPCDBURNER and install it. Find the ISO file using the software and choose to do or "burn" an Image file. Point it to the ISO file which is a CD or DVD image file. It will then burn not the ISO file, but unzip the ISO and burn those files to the DVD to create an exact "image" of the distributor's original Linux LIVE DVD.

Once it's created, then reboot, clk on F9 or F12 or whatever allows your computer to choose the boot device, and choose CDROM or DVD whichever is there. It will then boot to the LIVE Linux version and you will have an operating system running with quite a few tools available on it.

Thank you James

why is it that
May 13, 2014 6:12AM PDT

nobody has answered my query ?

I have gone through the manual re-install etc but nothing has changed. The colour sliders still insist on staying in the full position even after adjustment and using the screen gives me eye strain like it never did before.

Simple question, when adjusting the colour calibration, is it not correct to expect the adjustment to stay where you have put it ?

I have a feeling something is horribly wrong and I may be damaging my eyes but could do with a bit of advice here please ...

Thanks

My guess is that the details are missing.
May 13, 2014 6:25AM PDT

I've seen this on laptops that folk "installed Windows" and others where the owner went on a rampage deleting BLOATWARE and removed an app responsible for color control.

The missing details mean folk can't get traction on what it could be.

Since it never worked, what is the story about the warranty? Wouldn't we find and correct such before the year runs out?

Hi Bob
May 13, 2014 8:36AM PDT

Thanks but it is long out of warranty, I will check on the video drivers though.

- Collapse -
Sorry but I was unclear as to what is missing.
May 13, 2014 8:39AM PDT

Make, model, story, etc. Basically those words in red you see when posting.

I'm sorry Bob but
May 13, 2014 9:15AM PDT

I did put all that information in the original question.
Thanks anyway. It seems to be a lot better now after updating drivers. I'm ashamed for not thinking of that myself, Doh ! Happy

I don't see the full story there.
May 13, 2014 9:18AM PDT

But let's use only what was told. Restore the machine to the factory condition and re-test. If that fails you have a product issue to take up with its maker.

the proper video driver files
May 13, 2014 6:40AM PDT

for that laptop must be downloaded and installed. What you describe is almost always due to having the wrong video driver files loaded.

Thanks James, that
May 13, 2014 8:37AM PDT

sounds a bit more hopeful, I will try that and report asap.

As mentioned to Bob,
May 13, 2014 9:19AM PDT

Problem now greatly improved or eliminated. The issue of updating drivers is not beyond my level of experience and I should have thought of that. I can carry on with what I need to do now and not be driven mad with excess eye strain.
Many thanks James.

Something is still missing from the story.
May 13, 2014 9:25AM PDT

Drivers don't wear out and while there are scams about driver updates the story is incomplete.

I wonder if someone accepted a Microsoft driver.

most puzzlingly
May 12, 2014 3:04AM PDT

why is it that the "finish & save" function within the colour calibration (W7) sliders do NOT save the settings and even just clicking on finish and going back through the pages to the sliders from scratch puts the sliders back to "full" ?
How should I get this attended to as it is difficult to define exactly what is at fault ?
I have a massive amount of work I need to get on with but don't want to load all my data back on there only to have to put the machine into repair.
Help Happy
Thanks
