color settings

Feb 27, 2004 9:22AM PST

my husband was preforming a routine scan search on my childs computer.....while the scanning was going on the child walked past the table and hit a button on the keyboard.....now the display only has two settings.....two color and 16 bit color.....I know this computer had other settings.....my child has games that require 256 resolution and has been playing them for a couple years and now they have no color.....now the windows desktop is grey and white instead of the blue and white clouds.....the computer runs windows 98 se.....also is there anyway to go back in time on the computer.....being a childs computer there are alot of games and junk on it that do not need to be there.....my brother has said if I went to system tools I should see a link for back date but I do not see anything.....if I could take it back to like January 2000 that would be great.....even a restore would be wonderful.....

Win98 does backups only if you configured ahead of time to do them. it's not reliable even when configured so, you can't rely on it.

i'm assuming that your computer is not booting into Safe mode. i don't know why only those choices are being offered because usually when there is something wrong with video, the choices are 16 color and 256 color. anyway, you need to check that the video drivers are correct for your system. right click on the Desktop and choose Properties. under the Settings tab it should say the monitor type and the video adapter name. if the monitor says Default Monitor, you need to change it to match the type you have. if the video adapter says Default VGA, then you need to change the video drivers. how you do that depends on which needs fixing. your owners manual may say give you directions on how to configure these.

I am fairly sure that your color problem has more to do with a lose connection than a keyboard misshap. Check your monitors video connection to your video card located at the back of your computer, make sure that it's secure. Failing that it can also be the cable connection at the monitor itself(more likley).
Going back in time can be done with Symantec(Norton Clean Sweep)this will allow you to go back. Please do read the instructions on how to accomplish this. Hope this helps.
