Question

Color changes in address field of Internet explorer

Apr 12, 2015 2:50AM PDT

In Internet Explorer and in Windows Live Mail I have had some unwanted color Changes since a couple of Days.
The change shows when for example entering a few characters in the address field. Internet Explorer then shows a couple of recent visited web services and the letters they have in common with what I just added is highligted in yellow (and therefore hardly readable).
Yes, I know IE is about to leave cyberspace soon, but the problem also occur in windows live mail where some external links from mails are yellow as well.
Anyone who knows where to change this back? Just send me your mail address if you want me to send a screen shot of the problem.
Regards,
Martin

Answer
This is "by design".

"If the website has a certificate, the color in the Address bar shows the certificate's validation level.

The following table describes what the colors in the Address bar mean."
More at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/make-secure-transactions-in-ie9

From what I know this change carried on to later versions.

"Yellow

The authenticity of the certificate or certification authority that issued it can't be verified. This might indicate a problem with the certification authority's website."

My bet is some cert has expired.

Only characters are coloured

To make the description of my problem clear: It's not the background color of my address field that is changing, but the letters I type. And not all letters.

For example :if I'm about to search the site "www.travelguide.com" and start to add the letter "t" in the address field, then I have a couple of suggestions where the t is marked with yellow and the rest of the text is black.

For example (where the captial letters mean yellow):
www.friTidsresor.se
www.afTonbladet.se
www.hoTmail.com

Then try another user account and

1. Another user account.
2. Reset IE (how is on the web)
3. Use other browsers.

It's a shame there are no more details as to OS and IE versions. It doesn't sound broken here as MSFT did implement this in some versions.

Other thoughts.

Could be:

1. Another virus or malware.
2. Failing video card.
3. Themes (which do fail)

Here (Windows 7, IE11) if I type T in the address bar only sites starting with the t (or with www.t) are shown, and the (starting) t is in blue. That's much more readable than yellow. Also the text at the bottom (enable Bing suggestions) is blue.

That's all I can say about the problem. I don't know where this color is defined. Not much help, I'm afraid.
