Question

Coaxial to analogue - from Blu Ray to amp.

Jun 30, 2015 8:43AM PDT

I have a rather old amp (Rotel RA972) and a new Blu Ray player (Sony BDP S6200). I would like to be able to hear the sound from the Blu Ray in my speakers. The problem is that the BD only has coaxial connection and the amp doesn't. Is there anyway of fixing this? I have looked up adapters but don't really know which to get.
Any help appreciated.

Answer
Nope. You need a newer AV receiver. Sorry (n/t)

I guess I have to do some more research on this or buy a new amp, which I don't like... I have always used very good equipment and it's expensive! The Rotel I have now was bough over ten years ago and was VERY good at the moment.

Pick one off amazon's best seller's list. No one I know will stand behind these things. Always someone finding out that MP4 Streaming Channel VBR drops out or such. (the MP4 part is fictional.)

We're talking about getting sound out of speakers instead of the built -in speakers on the TV. IOW, free standing speakers.

Yes, you can try one of the converters for that purpose

If all you want/need is stereo sound, I would give it a try. Most of them only have a requirement that the HDTV is capable of outputting PCM via digital coxial or optical, which most do.

Let us know if you need any more advice. Down the road, I would encourage you to grab even an entry level set of surround sound speakers to see what you are missing with some of the amazing blu ray surround tracks Wink

cheers

(NT) At 350 bucks, I can get a decent receiver.

I doubt it.....

Maybe a decent, but not a high end.

Ok, tell us the difference between decent and high end...

Sometimes folk get uppity if they don't get into the high end but at 350 bucks we can do better than a convertor.

Blu Ray players are able to output a higher resolution surround sound signal, which you cannot enjoy on your ancient Rotel equipment and stereo speakers. While the Schiit may be acceptable, you still would gain more utility by upgrading your receiver, and getting some proper surrounds/sub.

FWIW, I see Rotel as good but not great equipment. With a new receiver cost arguably nominal by comparison but at the same time providing a lot more features, why worry about connecting it to your old stuff?
