Question

Coax/HDMI Conversion

Mar 25, 2018 11:48AM PDT

Evening all,

I have recently inherited (it came with the house!) a Sony amp. The amp does not have any sort of coax input... presumably because they assume that most people have Sky or Virgin these days. So, my question is this... if I get a coax to HDMI converter, would this allow me to run the TV through the amp without going through the DVD player?!

If so, (without costing the earth) are there any recommendations? There seem to be loads available on Amazon, but they all seem to do way more than I want/need!

Thanks,

Cerbera

Clarification Request
The Sony you listed has HDMI and Analog inputs galore.

https://docs.sony.com/release//STRDG910_Quick_Setup_Guide_EN_FR.pdf

The DVR (you called it a DVD has HDMI output so the classic setup is...

All sources to the Sony Your DVR has HDMI as well as your TV and DVD.

So the best setup is ...

DVR -> Sony -> HDTV all with HDMI.

If you have an antenna that goes to both DVR and HDTV.

Final connection would be an audio optical cable from HDTV back to the Sony.

There is no need for coax here.

OK - think I've got it...

Thank you for the set-up guide, that's really helpful!

Looking at this, the set up I have is essentially correct, but I'm just missing an audio cable from TV to Sony unit?

You have to check that last connection.

I can't know if you need or have that last connection.

Ok, no worries - its the only connection on the setup guide that I've not got in place, so will give it a go!

Sorry to revive this one... I've finally got hold of an optical audio cable long enough, but still no sound on the tv! Set up is...

Aerial socket on wall to both DVD and tv (via booster/splitter).

DVD to Sony to tv all via HDMI

Tv to Sony via optical audio into sonys 'video 1 in' port

I get sound (through sony) and image through DVD on the tv's hdmi1 channel, but when I switch to dvb channel, I get image but no sound...

Where am i going wrong?!

Main channel (?)

Apologies for the double post... when the DVD unit is playing through the Sony, the main channel (I think!) keeps dropping out... ie the background music/sounds are fine but the speaking randomly disappears for up to a minute at a time! Very annoying!

Is this a configuration issue or something more difficult?

Usually when the audio decoder is not up to the task.

Try setting audio to PCM or Stereo on all sources and players.

Will give that a go!

Any ideas in the cabling issues with the tv (see post above)

Sorry, I know i'm most likely missing something obvious... I've replicate the set up that you suggested adding in the optical audio link... the tv only has one optical out, so that has to be right, but the Sony unit has three optical ins (sat in, video 1 in and video 2/bd in). Have tried all three but still no sound Sad

I rarely seen anyone use an Optical input to TVs

The usual setup is all sources to the receiver and then for TV audio output, the optical output to the receiver.

If your system is too far off the beaten path then consider getting a home theater technician to sort it out.

Answer
I'm going with no.

HDMI is for HD AV (audio video) and old gear with coax is old SD and audio at best.

You would end up upset and poorer for trying this.

Let's try to sort this out. What is the source device and what is this HDTV and Sony amp? Models please.

Model numbers...
Mar 25, 2018 12:31PM PDT

Thanks for your reply. Model numbers are...

TV - Panasonic TX-42AS520B
DVD - Panasonic DMR-EX83EB-K
Amp - Sony STR-DG910

Currently, my bodge-job fix is...

Coax aerial point -> DVD player via coax cable
DVD -> amp via HDMI
amp -> TV via HDMI

... however this mean I have to watch through the DVD, and therefore have to watch what I am recording. The sound does come nicely through the amp and surround sound (even if the talking faded out annoyingly often!)

To by enable watching one channel/viewing another, I have also run a coax cable from the wall straight to the TV - but clearly this does not engage the amp...

Any ideas gratefully received!

PS. For that last optical audio link.

Use the Headphone jack to RCA so you don't have to get into optical to RCA convertors.
