CO teenager charged for "pulling a Cheney"

The boy's troubles started when he was confronted at school by a vice principal who suspected that he had been smoking in the boys bathroom. When presented to the principal, the kid exploded, cursing the administrator with some variants of the "F" word. For his outburst, the boy was hit with a disorderly conduct rap, which was eventually amended to interfering with the staff, faculty, or students of an educational institutional. Faced with what he thought was a speech crime, Eric Vanatta, the teen's public defender, drafted the below motion to dismiss the misdemeanor charge.

I guess the Senate must have been in session when this happened, otherwise the kid would simply have been engaging in "a frank exchange of views," right?

Sounds more like the vice-principal was a jouranalism major and the boy was conservative so the veep made an issue out of it rather than letting it slide as he had previously done with liberal students who were let slide for "pulling a Kerry" with the "F" word.

LOL Colorado is the Center of Liberalism. Yeah right. Do you truly believe that Colorado is going to be a Blue state in November? I'm so convinced that Conservative students in Colorado have it real tough these days. You will never cease to amaze me Ed...

it galls me that this has gone to the police and court.

The school should be more than capable of handling this issue. Suspend the kid, put him in dentention, whatever. It is just stupid that it has come to legal charges.

Hi, Rick,

I wish the kid's age had been given, as he could be anywhere from 13 to 17.

I agree that the court was not the place (though family court might have been). But, if he is young enough, it might have made an impression.

A couple of months ago I was at a neighborhood association meeting. Three policemen were in attendance re: Neighborhood Watch. Suddenly all 3 of them tore out of the door. They had seen 2 boys with bicycles who had stopped to fight in the street. Imagine their surprise (and chagrin) when they saw the officers. Happy Of course, they quickly mounted their bikes and rode off.

Thing is, our new Police Chief has the policy that intervening in small events could prevent big events.
