CNET Review Konica Minolta DiMAGE A2

Oct 5, 2004 1:11AM PDT

I was ready to make a purchase of the Konica Dimage A2 based upon the review I read from CNET selecting it as the editor choice and rating it higher than that of the Sony Dsc-f828 that I originally had planned to purchase. But, when I started some last minute research I found a lot of problems posted on the web which implied problem and returns for malfunctioning A2 cameras. I did a search on google under "Dimage A2 problem" and way too many to list in this forum. The Dimage if operating properly for my needs would be ideal however, I don't know that I have the skill level to determine whether the camera is defective or not. A major financial investment for me. Am I being over cautious

http://www.photographyblog.com/comments.php?id=2401_0_1_0_C notes the A2 and they thought the anti-shake wasn't paying off "in 90% of everyday shooting situations (your mileage may vary)."

There are always "issues" with photography. With the advent of digital photo the big issue I see too often is that people have some OS or USB issue and blame it on the camera (company, support or software). I have yet to experience this first hand but I'm very picky about a correctly configured PC... I do get to help others fix that issue, but it's far from a sure thing.

In closing, tell what issue you read about and provide a link.

I read the same remarks on one of the Minolta forums.

The reports implied that the camera would sometime fail to achieve a locked focus before taking the photo.

They were reporting many random out of focus photos.

Some were due to faulty cameras (early released cameras). Their also seems to be a learning curve to handling that camera.

I would be cautious too, that is not an inexpensive camera.

Here is a link to a Konica-Minolta Forum:

You can check and see if the complaints have disappeared from current posts.

Dimage A2 LCD failure - Minolta service problem
Nov 1, 2004 7:36AM PST

I want to share my bad experience with a new Dimage A2 and Minolta US service center. I am curious if A2 has in particular higher failure rate than other similar models.

Both of my LCD's (viewfinder too!) went completely blank after 2 weeks of use during my learning period. I had to sent almost new A2 to Minolta repair center in NY, and it has been waiting there for repair for over 4 weeks! Their service center is the only one in the US and it seems they don't have spare parts to fix A2's. They have been waiting for 4 weeks just to get some spare part and all they can "guarantee" is up to another 4 weeks of repair time! I am wondering if I am just unlucky or other A2 owners share the same fate.

With all the respect to many possitive reviews I have seen for A2, I will never buy Minolta again because of their service. It's not exactly a cheap camera to get such a poor support during waranty. I have seen other post reporting early failures of A2, so maybe Dimage A2 has some production quality issues.

Try out dpreview.com and there is a forum with just Minolta DSLR shooters there who have more experience with that brand.
