General discussion

Cnet, please consider moving Natali back to once a week.

Feb 12, 2009 2:11AM PST

I feel that the quality of the show has dropped significantly. Not only does she seem to not bring relevant insight or stories to this podcast, Natali's condescending tones over stories, jokes or references that she does not seem to understand bring down the mood of the show when Tom, Jason or Guest are riffing.

I really love BOL?s geeky humor, insightful commentary, relevant stories and intelligent banter, but lately it is becoming painful to listen to the podcast.

Perhaps her skill set/style are better suited for 'Loaded' or the '404'.

For some yes, but for others you are wrong

Yes, we loved Molly, but that's not the problem that I have with her. She doesn't seem to be able to talk about tech without a prompter or note cards, and she's the one that stops any geek talk that goes away from the subject. She pulls off topic to talk about family, dancing, and Paris Hilton type of stuff. If someone starts on Star Wars, Heroes, or something else in the same realm, she seems to want to end it quick to get back to the subject. Do we really have to here about Loaded all the time, or how much better she is on things?

I think that's too harsh

She is hardly a female bimbo. She does have technology knowledge she can keep up with Tom etc.
And I don't think it's surprising that she's referring to loaded, she's already covered a lot of the news on there and developed her thoughts about the topic for that show, and then she is talking about the same thing again on BOL.
You know Dvorak does the exact same thing, recycles his same lines between Twit, Crankygeeks and No Agenda. The difference is, he doesn't say 'on twit we talked about etc etc' he just says it again and assumes no one notices. Wink

I never said she was a bimbo

She's very good on loaded and CBS. I just don't think she's very good without a script or notes, and her interests are a little too teen girlie, not techie/geeky.

You're a little too kind

Dvorak, at least twice each TWIT, says "in a column I wrote at ..." Occasionally Cranky Geeks and such also come up, tho I sort of feel like that's usually one of the other guests doing it.

Thing is, I don't care at all! Have never seen it as an issue. The most I take from it is "Thanks, if I want more about that then I know where to go to get it." What does it take out of my life if I don't care--10 seconds? I'm OK with that, I don't demand that everything I listen to be 100% dead-bang on target for me at all times. I know how to fast forward on my player. Very useful when the Apple stories come on (wait, was that my outside voice?).

I know Tom and Molly have, more than once, referenced talking about something on TWIT and I've not heard any complaints. For that matter, no one complains about Cooley's cats, or Tom's book, or anyone else's personal tangents. Nor should they--makes them 3 dimensional humans instead of just talking heads with a script. Isn't that a good thing? SHEESH!

maybe dvorak

Maybe Dvorak is better known for all that before TWIT and gives a better referance?

Also Dvorak is a known plug dropper ( dvorak.com/blog anyone or channeldvorak.com )

But Nat, she is doing good, I don't subscribe to loaded so.. it bugs me somewhat..

I think its also the diffrence between Dvorak writing vs talking and if he talks about it again he does not name drop.

So what can Nat do? either name drop more sources other then Loaded, or just mentioned that "from what she had covered elsewhere".?

I think Nat's moving in and still getting used to how things swing here so I would tell her not to worry about the naysayers

ppl often talk about things theyve done previously...

Lame...
Feb 21, 2009 7:14AM PST

I just started listening to BOL early last year. I registered specifically for these anti-Natalie threads I keep seeing. The thread starter is seriously lame. It is really pathetic to complain this way. Natalie is doing great and has been a great addition to the podcast.

Yeah - I don't really get it.

You can still check out Molly distilled and unchecked (or lesser-checked) on Gadgettes - a great show which I didn't actually get around to checking out for a long time as I assumed it was aimed solely at women. (On the contrary, it's wasted on just them Silly )

I think what we're really missing is the unscripted face-to-face banter, and that really only comes after the hosts are comfortable with each other. Remember also that Natali phones in her hosting, which cripples her to a large extent. If you notice, on the occasions where Molly phoned in for hosting duty, the banter wasn't quite there. *That*, I think is the actual problem - they need a third anchor who is actually there.

That said, I don't see any reason for the hate.

Another new poster jumping to Nat's defence!
Feb 22, 2009 5:14AM PST

Like Matthew Es, I've also just registered on the CNet Forums so I can defend Natalie Del Conte against the flamers! I miss Molly as well, but it was her decision to drop down to being a weekly guest on BOL, as she's confirmed many times on the show. Natalie brings something different to the show, mainly her own personality and charm. Yes, she's different from Molly, but diversification is what keeps a daily show alive!

I have to agree that the shows where Natalie is in the studio are better, BOL has never been at it's best when one of the presenters has been on the phone. But it's something BOL is trying out so we should give them (and Natalie) time to adjust to this new format.

Best Wishes from the UK, melter65
