Cnet forum, button "create a new thread" missing

Jul 9, 2010 12:12PM PDT

So, on one of my machines (Win 7 x64, FF 6.3) I cannot see the "create a new thread" button of the CNET forums, and the frame (top row and bottom row with the cnet logos) is transparent. Why? I have switched off all add-ons, it works on all other machines.
weird.
I have now saved this link
http://forums.cnet.com/5200-19411_102-0.html?forumID=151
and use it to post.

Is this the same in IE

or any other browser?

I assume you are using another browser, or another computer to make the two posts you just did.

Do you have any security add-ons installed in Firefox, like NoScript, or similar?

works in IE, works on some machines

I use extensive scurity add-ons for FF.
But, I switched them all off, AND whitelisted Cnet, forums, and com in them. No avail.

In that case

the buttons are being prevented from displaying by some security add-on or other.

You don't say which add-ons you use, but it has to be one of them.

Try this.

Open Firefox in it's Safe Mode. How to do that here;
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/safe+mode#How_to_start_Firefox_in_Safe_Mode

Then return to these forums and see if the buttons appear. It's not conclusive because if they do not appear this may be because some settings, like Javascript, are disabled in Safe Mode, but if they do appear, then you will know that you have to hunt for an add-on or a setting or exclusion in an add-on.

not conclusive

Yes, disabled all add-ons, and the black top and bottom frames are still transparent, and the buttons missing.
Ironically, I run the same FF with all the same add-ons on another machine, and everything works.
This is, however, reproducible at home, so on Win7 and WinXPsp3, it's the same.
Weird.
Screenprint of the site, with all add-ons disabled (looks identical to with all enabled):

That was to be expected I think

If that image was taken while using Firefox in it's Safe Mode, then I should have expected that. All javascript is disabled and so much of the forums components would fail.

Or do you mean you get the same in Firefox's normal mode? If so then that is very strange.

There has to be a difference in the FF browser settings between the two at home and the one elsewhere.

In FF at home in Normal Mode, you can log in to CNET of course. Can you supply a screen print of a CNET page where you are trying to submit a post but the buttons do not display?

added new scrnprnts

The second file in the drop http://drop.io/a8yavea shows the page in normal mode, with all add-ons thrown out, but the Java and flash plugins alive. The third one shows the plugins. The TIFF viewer is the latest there is, even though it says outdated.

Hopefully others here will have some ideas.
