Cnet Certified Store "Authorized Software Resellers" scam?

Feb 4, 2010 12:48PM PST

Does anyone have experience with a site called "Authorised Software Resellers" "www.softwarelink.mobi"? I downloaded a Corel program, was charged $69 for the service. The activation program appeared to contain a trojan virus according to my security software which blocked the download. I have contacted their customer service, but have received no response. If this site is a scam, I'd like to warn others and be sure that Cnet is aware that the site is representing they are a Cnet Certified Store.

Thank you for your help!

another authorized software resellers scam
Aug 6, 2010 10:50PM PDT

Authorized software resellers have set up another website with exactly the same features others mentioned (unclickable sponsores, too good to be true prices)

Please...please...please someone figure out a way to shut down these criminals and those like them who love to use the Internet as their personal criminal playground!

another one bites the dust

Wish I'd read this thread beforehand. Just yet another report of authorized software resellers. Bought an early version of a Rosetta Stone course, wouldn't start up, took a long time for a help message, got it started but then it was locked from lesson 3 on, asked for help, silence so far. I figured the price was low because Rosetta had come out with their new version 4. Wrong.

I can't believe you would reply to spam. This only contributes to this evil practice. Why would you buy something from someone that is this immoral? Don't you expect to be ripped off or poisoned from a spammer?

Software DL site bogus

And I thought I checked well enough to make sure this place wasn't a scam, but to my surprise...

Have to call the bank and have them keep an eye out for the purchase amounts to stop payment.

Thanks guys, for your diligent efforts on this matter!

Yep, that is certainly a scam site

selling pirated software.

Their About Us. I have seen that office building before in other similar web sites.

Their FAQ;

1. Why do you sell software cheaper than official brand providers do?

Because buying the software with us you receive the copies of downloaded licensed versions. This means, you will have no hard copies of documentation (licenses or instructions)

Copies of downloaded versions?

I don't think Adobe, Microsoft, and so on allow such.

To my chagrin
Mar 8, 2011 1:56AM PST

I must admit that I was excited to get the program I was searching for at a discounted rate, since I have been unemployed for quite some time and this program would have helped to facilitate some residual income, so the 'BS' sensor was down...

The real drag is that I had to change my card info to ensure that these clowns wouldn't get my much needed funds.

One thing that struck me as odd was the hard to understand accent of the voice on the phone recording, that funny enough goes to VOICE MAIL.

Then the e-mail reply I received had typed broken english... as if imagining someone with a very thick Ukrainian or Soviet accent speaking to you.

All of these are serious red flags...

Again, thank you for your work in weeding these rats out, and I hope that others get to this thread before the rats get to their money!

Thanks to everyone feedback I was able to save myself some unnecessary stress and heartache. I was literally one click away from confirming my information and decided to perform a quick search. Thanks again

How do we unite against scammers?
Apr 2, 2011 3:43PM PDT

I'm happy that our posts helped, but I wonder how to get better visibility of scams on the net so that more people know where to look to find scams before it's too late. Since I started this thread over a year ago, I've found the scams certainly are certainly not limited to software. I have found that unless you know and have experience with the vendor - NO MATTER WHAT THEY SELL - it is highly advisable to search/google etc. the name of the company or product followed by "SCAM" and see if anything comes up. Also, use paypal wherever possible. I purchased an ebook last month - that was a scam - but quickly reported it to paypal, and actually got my money back. Imagine that!

Just some ideas to throw out there. If anyone else has ideas - please share!

Sadly not possible
Apr 2, 2011 9:09PM PDT

I'm not saying we shouldn't unite, or 'do anything', but there is no international agreement or agency that we can turn to to combat these fraudsters.

We do our best the way you have done with this very useful discussion, and also with the "SCAM" thread I raised a while ago here;
http://forums.cnet.com/7723-12543_102-386582.html?tag=threadListing;forum-threads

These discussions get listed in search engines, and so anyone who does take a few minutes out to do their own research stands a good chance of catching our discussions.

Information is the key, but what other people do with that information is entirely in their own hands.

I believe we have already done some good. Looking at the users who have contributed to these and other discussions and who have decided to 'walk away', is great. I wish we could do more, but these are still early days for the internet, and it is like "The Wild West", out there; every man woman and child for themselves.

Authorized Software Resellers

To everyone who contributed to this subject, thank you and keep up the great community work. You helped us avoiding a potentially very costly error and I am glad that you were able to shed some light on the subject.

To the law makers, it is about time that you find a way to go after scam artists like the above pseudo company. There must be a way to intercept the transfer of funds or catch any activity before it hits the users... Thanks
