CMD-P very slow to print in Mail

In Mail, the CMD-P operation can take up to 10 seconds to bring up the print dialogue, even for a small email. Choosing File>Print gives an immediate response. The problem is not apparent in any other application.

Intel iMac, 0.16.5, Brother mono laser printer.
