closing the laptop lid problem

May 7, 2009 12:09AM PDT

I bought a brand new Sony Vaio VGN-SR35G laptop just few months back. Initially had no problems with it. Always i'll put some downloads and leave my laptop idle during nights. For the past week, my laptop hangs if left idle. Now it has become too frequent, even if it's left for only about an hour. I have changed the settings to 'do nothing when lid is closed' and also i set the HardDisk to stay up. This should put my system UP for as long as i want to. But then even after these changes have been made, the problem still occurs. After i left it idle, and try to use it again the desktop actually seem to appear just fine but everytime i try to access any application it'll start to hang. I can't even access the task manager, all I'm left to do is to manually shutdown the system. Could anyone please help me with this?

Always call that in.

There are many models that begin a descent to a dead machine with failures like that. Please lodge your failures with Sony now so if it fails at month 13 (just out of warranty) you have these failures on record.

Laptop usage
May 7, 2009 3:31PM PDT

Laptops contrary to popular belief are not 24x7 devices. They are supposed to be used off and on then shutdown. A laptop is more prone to heat stress than other computers due to reduced space and total reliance on simple fans, heat tubes, etc.. Some models simply are hot to begin with and others more friendly to longer use, but either way, the longer it is used the more stress it will endure and sooner or later become an issue. having the laptop idle isn't a good idea for prolonged periods, shut it down. I exclude any glitches such as bad batteries, int. power ckts. or restrictive air ways, etc..
