Closing Tab in IE7 Makes It Restart

Mar 26, 2007 4:40AM PDT

I have two questions relating to IE7.

I'm running Vista Home Premium with IE 7, on a Dell Dimension E521. Tabs in IE7 are a good idea but they don't work on my computer. When I close a tab I get a pop up telling me Internet Explorer has stopped working and Windows is figuring out why. It then restarts but I've lost all the open windows which is an aggravation. Has anyone else experience this? And, does anyone know of a fix?

Also, if I right click on a window in the quick start toolbar to close a window then I get a pop up asking me if I want to close all tabs. If I say "no" then the tab I want to close stays open. Is that what it's supposed to do?

Thanks
Linda

Closing tab in IE7 makes it restart

Okay Billicious that sounds like a solution to me. Could you tell me how you solved your compatibility issue? I suppose Vista has some kind of utility to help with that but I'm still learning. I went from Windows 98 to Vista, skipped all those versions in between so there's much I don't know.

Using the center mouse button?
Mar 26, 2007 7:23AM PDT

I have had a similar problem when trying to close a tabbed page clicking on the tab close button. It stops IE and restarts. However, I discovered that if you move the mouse cursor to the page you want to close and then click the center mouse button/scroll wheel it seems to work. However, there is an obvious problem that should be addressed by Microsoft. Bill

Using the center mouse button?

I tried that; it had no effect. All my center mouse button does is scroll the page. Am I missing something or maybe the center button on your mouse does more than mine?

I agree MS should address this problem. I have contacted MS a couple times but it is a tedious process with mostly unsatisfactory results. They have a forum site but it is set up poorly and I hate using it. I like CNET much better. MS should be more interested in problems with their new software. They should be looking for people who are using Vista and/or IE7 and ask for their feedback.

Thanks for the help Bill. If I'm doing something wrong please let me know.

Have you tried clicking the scrool wheel?
Mar 27, 2007 5:37AM PDT

Linda, I have a very simple Dell corded optical mouse; nothing fancy and about as simple as you can get these days. The scroll wheel does actual depress for a click. Are you sure yours doesn't? If it doesn't, I don't think you have another option to try to close the tabs. Keep on Microsoft. Bill

Download a new copy and overwrite?
Mar 27, 2007 9:26AM PDT

That worked for me when Netscape went buggy. If the problem persists you might want to try Firefox. I like it better than IE7 and it's free. Firefox can automatically migrate your settings from IE7. If you prefer IE7 it's at least a workaround until MS fixes the problem.

I have a Dell corded optical mouse too. When I click on the scroll wheel it doesn't close the window there's just a picture of two arrows, one up one down and when I move it the page scrolls. If I click again the arrows go away. I guess I'll just stay on Microsoft as you suggest. Thanks for your help.

Did the Vista OS come with your computer or did you install it as an upgrade?
If you installed it as an upgrade, I have found, as have many people in this forum, that you MUST do a clean install for Vista to work correctly.
I have been running Vista since beta 2 and have no problems except the learning curve I can complain about.
Again...try a clean installHappy

Re: Clean Install

My Vista came with the computer. I bought it in February. Are you still running the Beta version of Vista? I have several problems with Vista. One was the driver error message but that has been corrected thanks to postings here at the forum. Another is I can't open a photo CD to view or copy the pictures. I get an error message that tells me to install the address book and the latest version of Internet Explorer. Don't know what either of those have to do with viewing a CD. Microsoft told me to contact Dell since the OS came with the computer. And, I have this IE7 can't close without restarting thing. Earlier today I tried to spell check an email and Windows told me "that language is no longer supported in spell check." English is no longer supported? Hmmm. I was able to fix that. Seems like your version is the exception to the rule as far as glitches and bugs are concerned. I agree with you about the learning curve though. It is a big change especially for me because I was running Windows 98.

Thanks for your comments.

experience Windows vista Busines
Mar 27, 2007 12:20PM PDT

IE7 in Windows Vista Business, behavior, extraordinary. It would not close, and I did try out everything. And then looked at what did I DO, last time it was ok. I did not have yahoo messenger search installed. I removed it, and re-start, and the IE7 was nice again. But why does, yahoo and msn cooperate, when they collide in the browser itself?

Vista and Yahoo
Mar 27, 2007 7:27PM PDT

I am not experiencing any of the problems reported in previous posts.
Someone mentioned Yahoo. Yahoo toolbar, mail and search run fine on my Ulimate x64 retail version, but Yahoo Messenger, according to Yahoo, is not yet compatible and does cause browser errors and Yahoo Messenger always re-opens it's window when you attempt to close it. Yahoo claims the new version of Yahoo Messenger that will be released soon will solve these Yahoo/Vista problems. They didn't say when. Meanwhile I have removed Yahoo Messenger from my machine.

I had this same problem. My step by step solution....
May 14, 2007 9:51AM PDT

I had this exact same problem with Vista Ultimate + IE7 + Yahoo Add Ons. It actually started when I turned of a new menu that Yahoo had inserted in my menubar unexpectedly. (Annoying btw for any Yahooligans listening and please don't fall back on the 'you shoulda read our inanely long license agreement form' excuse, when defending poorly integrated software.)

Anyhow, here is how I fixed it on my system:
1. Open IE7.
2. Go to Tools menu.
3. Click "Manage add-ons" menu item... then select "Enable or Disable Add-ons".
4. Sort the list by name by clicking the Name column title, to alphabetize the list.
5. Scroll to bottom to find the Yahoo! items. I had 4 items.
6. Select each one and then the Disable radio button below.
7. Click OK to close dialog.
8. Restart browser and hopefully your problem is fixed after the restart.

If it's not the Yahoo add-ons then try turning off other 3rd party items slowly until you strip down your IE to a barebones config. If it is an add-on then you'll likely find the problem with this troubleshooting. Be sure to re-enable 3rd party items that you like/need.

Thanks for the info. It's not a Yahoo problem since there's nothing from Yahoo installed, however, there are many other items that it could be since there are seveal add ons installed.

I have already disabled the tab feature, reverting back to the classic version of explorer. I don't miss the tabs at all. It was a neat little tool but unnecessary to my internet usage.

I will keep your instructions though in case I decide I need the tabs again. I appreciate your help and I'm sure those instructions will be used by many people using this forum, particularly as more people get Vista.

Thanks,
Linda

IE7 Restarts when closed
Mar 1, 2008 3:01AM PST

I have Vista Home Premium on an HP Pavilion notebook with the same issue. I couldn't find a solution so I tried a clean reboot to start fresh with my original factory settings. IE still restarts when I try to close a tab.

I imagine it is a bug that Microsoft needs to fix and I agree they are very hard to reach with these types of comments/complaints.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

IE7 restarts when closed
Sep 28, 2008 10:07AM PDT

Even I faced the same problem(IE7 restarts when closed) on my HP pavilion notebook with vista SP1 installed. I had uninstalled yahoo and AOL tool bar and reset the internet settings to factory settings.(control panel->Internet options->Security->Restore all zones to default level, control panel->Internet options->advanced->Reset).This had solved my problem.

i had the exact same problem... here's the fix
May 24, 2007 6:41AM PDT

1) Go to the Control Panel, and then go into the Internet Options. For those of you that don't know, you can quickly get to the Internet Options by click on "Classic View" on the left or clicking on the Network and Internet link in near the middle of the window on the left side.

After you go into Internet Options, go to the Security TAB and un-check the box that says "Enable Protected Mode". After you disable the Enable Protected Mode, simply click APPLY and OK. After you close out and open up Internet Explorer again. You will find that everything works again. If a little yellow bar comes up under the address bar annoying you about Protected Mode being turned off, just click it and select the option that doesn't notify you about anymore.

2) This other option didn't work for me but it might work for some of you. You can also go into Internet Options in the same place as Step 1, but instead of the Security TAB, you go to the Advanced TAB and scroll down to where it has the options for phishing. Just disable the phishing option or address filtering protection thingy and then click APPLY and OK.

More info are in this link that I got the info from.

Why use IE7 any way
Jan 5, 2008 12:12PM PST

My new Dell laptop with Vista Home Premium came with IE7 integrated and I had the same problem, until a friend suggested the Safari web browser. I absolutely love this browser, it is more secure, faster, runs Javascript better and faster, It is the best web browser I have ever used, and now I only use IE to access Microsoft update that is only supported with IE7.

My suggestion if not willing to use Safari, go to Internet options under Tools and change the settings.

IE7 restarting solutions
Mar 7, 2008 1:43AM PST

I noticed that my problem with IE7 restarting would occur every time I had Word 2003 opened at the time that I closed a tab or browser window, but when Word was closed it would only happen on rare occasions. I know this probably defies most of the posted solutions, but now that I've installed Office 07 it hasn't happened at all!

I'll take note of all of these suggestions in case it starts happening again, but for now I'm not going to mess with a good thing.

FYI, I don't have Google or Yahoo Toolbar and it was still happening.

My Fix - Remove the beta Google Toolbar v5
Mar 22, 2008 8:37AM PDT

I too had the Vista x64 SP1 IE7 restart when you closed any IE7 window. I solved it by not loading my beta Google Toolbar v5.
