Clock changing the month

Windows XP
Intel Pentium 4
CPU 2.53 GHz
Asus-P4PE

My clock is changing the month , the first time was about 3 months ago ,and now twice in the past week .

It always goes ahead one month from August 31 to Sept. 30 .
Could this be the CMOS battery I know that a run down battery will affect the system time
but could it go ahead like this and not back .
