Question

Clean install of Windows; now fans and screen not working?

Mar 7, 2020 7:28AM PST

I have a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro model 20266. I had to do a clean install of Windows a few days ago. The computer was acting up so badly I wasn't able to use the built in recovery options or create a restore point and had to do a clean install of Windows 10 from a USB. I had to format the Windows partition to do it. (D drive still intact.)

Anyway, now I have noticed two problems:
1 - The built in fans no longer work. I downloaded a fan checking tool and the computer doesn't appear to be detecting the fans at all. They are completely clean and worked fine up until the reinstallation. The computer just doesn't detect the hardware.
2 - I am not able to adjust screen brightness or automatically rotate the screen like I could before. I checked in device manager, and my monitor is showing up as "PnP Monitor Lock." I tried manually updating/installing the Generic PnP Monitor and Non-Generic PnP Monitor without luck. The system just doesn't seem to be detecting the hardware right.

Anyone got any ideas?

Answer
Re: install

Download all needed drivers from the lenovo site, and install them in the right sequence.
And a tip: when everything works, make a recovery drive, as recommended by Microsoft in https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4026852/windows-create-a-recovery-drive . You can use it to do a clean install of the system as it was when you made the drive. That's much better than a generic install like you probably did now.

Already updated drivers

Thanks, I actually already tried this. There's limited drivers on the Lenovo site for this model at this point, So I also used two different driver update tools to make sure everything is in shape. The monitor drivers are installed, for example, but throwing a code 45 not connected. The chip set driver is also up to date. Really not sure how to get the laptop to detect the fans, that is my biggest concern right now.

I guess I didn't really pay attention to the order they were installed in. Does it make that big of a difference?

Yes. Install order can matter.

My routine for over a decade:
1. Install the OS.
2. For older hardware, maybe, just maybe do not install drivers. Varies with the PC>
3. Install drivers for the chipset (from AMD or Intel most of the time.)
4. Test again for what does not work.
5. Test some more drivers and then the APPS that control things like WiFi, etc.

You wrote about DETECT THE FANS. Windows natively did not detect fans so maybe there is a communication issue here. MAYBE you are talking about the SMBUS and other systems that MAY OR MAY NOT FUNCTION with apps like SPEEDFAN.

Then again, there is a chance the fan subsystem has failed. Then again this could be yet another owner expecting SMBUS and such to work with SPEEDFAN or another app. AGAIN, Windows may or may not be the issue here as SPEEDFAN and such has to tap into the SMBUS or those other control systems.

Let me toss ALL THAT OUT THE WINDOW and write "Use the maker's restore media to get it back to factory condition." You may have to order said media.

Thanks, I will try Lenovo recovery media. They are charging me $70 to send me a CD. Laptop doesn't even have a darn CD drive so I'll have to buy an external one.

I gotta ask.

This means that there was no full backup of the system so that's a done deal.

Question: Are Lenovo's not shipping with a means to create recovery media now?

Why I ask is that recovery media creation was something we had to do when the makers stopping packing these in the box.

Not sure

Honestly not sure. I don't recall getting any recovery media with this computer. I actually made a recovery usb years ago but can't find it anywhere of course.

System scan

I used Lenovo Service Bridge to scan the fan, and got "Failed: Module Not Support."
