Clean install of Windows

So I'm fixing a friend's computer but I can't seem to find any discs for the drivers (it's a Compaq). I need to at the very least install the network card driver so that I can update Windows (I'm trying to install XP). I went to Compaq's website but it was of no help, there was no network driver.

Are there any alternatives or basic network drivers that I can use that aren't included on the XP CD that I can use? Or at the very least something I can use that will identify which driver I need so that I can download it?

Need the model number

of the Compaq. That way, can check the motherboard specs and give you what is needed. Give complete info on the Compaq number.

You left out too much in order to give a real answer. The Compaq model#, etc. If the network setup is via a slot card or build-in, etc.. If there even a network card. Did you look in the h/w system manager and notice any red/yellow flags that need attention? Check all that and come back. You may want to use a system checker that reports what's inside the case like PC Wizard 2009 or similar, google for it.

I found one of the backup discs so I fixed the problem. I'll use PC Wizard in the future, thank you for the replies.
