Question

Clean install of Win 8 question

Jul 19, 2012 1:59AM PDT

I am trying to do a clean install of Win 8 (Release Preview) on a Dell Laptop. During the installation, Windows installer asks for a source for drivers. I looked and the drivers available on on the Dell site and they are all .exe files. I assume those are files that will install on a running system and not in the format that the Windows installer recognizes. How can I get the drivers in the correct format for Windows installer?

Let's hope you called Dell but

From what I hear you skip that and get the OS running then hope the Windows 7 drivers work later.

Some are upset about this stuff and want support for an OS that has not been released but I'll try to share what a few others did. Just push on through and install W7 drivers later.

Got it.

Thanks to some other forums that are helpful instead of wanting to lecture, I got it installed. I had to replace my HDD and thought I might upgrade to Win 8 instead of going back to XP. I wanted to see if it would be a suitable purchase when it is finally released. This computer is not my primary computer. It's a spare and I already had a HDD available. $40 isn't an outrageous price to pay for a new OS.

That was no lecture.

It was the method we are using. I only added a little bit about what I've been encountering lately and sorry if you felt it was a lecture.

May I ask where you got the installer? Last time I checked, it wasn't released yet...
