Cingular 850 GSM/1900 GSM SIM card

Feb 11, 2005 11:15AM PST

I just need to know something about moving this SIM to a better phone. Do I just need to make sure that a new phone has both 850 and 1900 frequencies? Will it not matter if the new phone supports other frequencies also? Thank-you.

Shouldn't matter at all

A SIM card is simply an "information chip" that programs your phone number and settings like your address book (if you stored them to your chip instead of to the phone's memory) from one phone to another.

SIM cards are usually transferable between any phone that is also GSM capable and is not "locked" to a different phone company than yours. I have transferred a SIM chip from a "uniband" (800 MHz) phone to a "dual band" (800 and 1900) and later to a tri-band (800, 900 and 1900) phone with no problems.

Good luck!

One more question!
Feb 11, 2005 8:59PM PST

First of all, thanks for taking the time to answer my question. The other thing I need to know, do I need to do anything special to take the SIM out of my current phone, I don't need a "special code" or anything to remove it without damaging or "burning" it? The phone itself is the only thing that is locked, right? I guess that's 2 questions, sorry!

No you should be able to just take the SIM card out

Usually when you open the back of the phone and take out the battery, you'll see the SIM card. There is a slot and it either pulls out or you press a button to get it out.

Only the phone is "locked". But the SIM card is setup to work with your carrier. If you change carriers (i.e. from Cingular to T-Mobile) you'll have to take it to a dealer to reprogram it.
