Question

Chrome Page Unresponsive Message

Sep 28, 2018 10:04PM PDT

I have a HP ProDesk 400 G2 Mini desktop with a 2.5 GHz i5-6500T processor and 4GB RAM. It is running Windows 7 64Bit.
Yesterday I installed a couple of utility programs (System Mechanic and Privacy Guardian) which came bundled free with my upgrade to Acronis True Image 2019. I do not normally use utility programs but as they came free I installed them. I did run System Mechanic which made some changes.
Today, my default browser Chrome is giving me a Page Unresponsive message with the circle going around with all web pages i open. My internet speed is fine (Speed Test shows over 100Mb/sec) and Firefox does not have the problem. My wife also does not have the problem on her notebook. I tried the following with no success -
1. I uninstalled and re-installed Chrome
2. I did a system restore back to before the utility programs were installed
3. I uninstalled both utility programs
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Clarification Request
Let's get this straight.

It worked fine until you installed those apps? That's a common complaint of System Mechanic and why all the moderators I know don't advise their use. Once these run the changes are nearly impossible to find and undo.

If System Mechanic won't answer (they never have fixed a single PC I'd worked on) then you use your backups to get back to when it worked fine.

Learnt My Lesson

I usually stay clear from utility programs but succumbed because they were free - never again.
I mentioned that I tried a system restore to a date prior to installation of the 2 programs but got an error message that it was unsuccessful.
You mentioned use of backups. I do have a Acronis True Image 2019 cloned image of my drives prior to the installation of the utility programs (I do this every 2 weeks) but am nervous about using it for a full recovery for a relatively minor issu (Firefox works fine)
I will be calling the geeks on Monday.
Thanks again for your comments.

Appears to Be Fixed
Sep 29, 2018 3:58PM PDT

I disabled my AV and tried System Restore again. Now I get a message that I do not have any restore points. Yesterday I had a few including when I installed the utilities and most importantly one prior to then, but none now.
However, I did reset Chrome and that seems to have solved the problem
No more new utility programs!
Thanks Dafydd

Now create a new restore point. Glad it helped. Sometimes these "utilities" Embed their selves in the browser.
