Question

Chrome is crashing when games are in fullscreen

Apr 15, 2017 9:42AM PDT
Hey guys,

I would really aprecciate if any of you could help me out with this "little problem":

I don't know what's happening, but every time I play a video game in fullscreen like League of Legends, and many others, I minimize the game and then I can't right click inside a web page or click bookmarks, because chrome is going to close without a warning. It happens to me in normal and incognito chrome windows. I've already reinstalled chrome several times. I did clear my Chrome cache, cookies and all those stuffs. The Cleanup tool didn't work either. I've even tried Chrome Canary but nothing changed.

My first thougth was that this was a problem that came with the latest Windows 10 update that I installed like a week ago, called "Creators update". But I'm not sure, when I saw the issue with chrome I immediately went back to the previous build of the OS. But after that I noticed that chrome was still crashing. So my theory wasn't correct...apparently.

I've tried disabling one by one all my extensions, but it's still happening. At this point I really don't know what else to do I don't even know what is causing the problem.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Just A Thought or Two.......

First, try re-setting Chrome;
https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/3296214?hl=en

Second: As to the Creators Update, I've installed it on a couple of computers so far and have no issues with browsers, but then again, I don't use Chrome. And it's not clear which version of Windows 10 you're on right now, but it seems as though the Windows 10 "upgrade/update" process may not install all the files correctly, or maybe they're damaged, or maybe something else, but running Chkdsk has fixed quite a few of these minor glitches. Try running Chkdsk in "repair" mode to find any damaged files and correct them. Start by opening a command prompt as an admin. RIGHT click on the Start button, choose "Command Prompt (Admin). Once there, type chkdsk /f /r /x, leaving the appropriate spaces between the letters as shown, then press the Enter key. You should see a note that it can't be run till a restart is done, type "Y" for yes, then press the Enter key again. Close the command prompt and restart the computer. Chkdsk will run upon restart and will take quite a while to finish.. Don't panic when the progress bar stays at 10% for a long time. It's fairly normal and the Chkdsk process may take a couple of hours.

When it's finished, it will boot to your normal startup/lock screen and you can login normally and then see if things are working correctly again.

Just a note: There are a few computers, including a couple of mine, having issues with running Chkdsk on the new Creators Update. Let us now if it becomes a problem for you.

Hope this helps.

It didn't work
Apr 15, 2017 12:15PM PDT

Hi,

This is my current OS version: http://i.imgur.com/nCpbQkG.png. I think it's the previous build of the creators uptade one. These are my current graphic drivers: http://i.imgur.com/wBx3bHB.png

I tried re-setting Chrome but it didn't work. The chkdsk solution didn't work either. Actually, it was faster that I thought it would be, it lasted like 20 minutes or something. I followed every step.

Now I'm updating the OS to get the creators update version again and then try to do the chkdsk step to see if it works.

Any other suggestions?

Sorry for my english btw.

1. Test in other browsers. Here's why.

Look at caniuse.com and you find not all browsers take all codes. Only your well seasoned users knows this.

2. Try disabling Chrome Hardware Acceleration.

3. Talk to your PC maker about drivers. Try latest.

Yes, You're Win10 Build Is Before the Creators Update

But I find it strange that Chkdsk took just 20 minutes. If you used the full command as I posted earlier, there should be 5 different stages which run AFTER the computer restarts.... and unless you have an extremely small hard drive which is checked during the 4th and 5th stages, it should take at least an hour or so, usually longer.

That doesn't mean it's going to fix the problem, but the short run time makes it seems as though you didn't run the full repair/fix mode.

So when you're ready, be sure to try running those games in a different browser per Bob's suggestion.

Hope this helps.

It's working fine now

The issue is gone. I don't exactly what did the miracle.

If anyone else is having the same problem I'm gonna put every step I followed down here:

1. I was on the Creators Update OS build.
2. I rolled back to the previous version of Windows.
3. Then did the chkdsk step that Grif told me to do.
4. After that, I updated windows to the Creators Update build again. (If anyone else after install this update is having a black screen, just followed these steps).

After that chrome wasn't crashing at all.

Thank you Griff and Proffitt for helping me out with these, I really appreciate it.

Also, Have You Checked Your Graphics Driver?

Make sure that your video driver, and audio driver, weren't changed during the update. Windows Update will frequently update your drivers to ones that Windows thinks are best. Sometimes it's not the best driver for your uses on the computer.

Hope this helps.

Good ideas (actually great.)

I've found Chrome's hardware acceleration to be a real TEST of a machine's drivers.

There are also other googles like "How to disable hardware acceleration in Chrome?"
And we can try this in another browser.
