Try the usual Winsock fix noted at http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=xp+winsock+reset as well as researching then looking at "proxy" settings. You'll want no proxy.

I was attacked recently by some kind of spyware--some kind of hostage taker called Anti Virus. I couldn't work any browser, or anti-virus or anti-spyware program until I paid Anti-Virus (I didn't).
I went into Safe Mode and swept the OS with MalwareBytes, Spybot, AVG 9.0 and Avast.
Now I can connect with MS Outlook and Firefox, but can't with Opera, Chrome (my favorite) and IE8 (which I need at some sites).
I checked my Windows Firewall settings and Chrome and Opera were listed in exceptions but they still won't connect.
Is there anything else I can do other than take it to H.L. Computers in Stone Mountain, GA and pay them to do it?
Thanks for your consideration.
