chosing new camera, need advice please!

by _alicia_n_ / September 23, 2008 4:34 PM PDT

hello all,
I'm looking for a camera for myself.
I've been looking at the canon camera's, especially the A series mainly, I know that Canon is a pretty good brand.

I really want the camera to have a view finder, and I don't want it to be really compact. I've never had a compact/small camera, and I don't know how much I would actually enjoy it.

I'm hoping that I can get a good quality camera for under $200.00, preferably. college kids don't have that much money Happy

I've been mainly torn between the canon powershot a720 and the a590. For a while I was looking at the a1000, but there aren't any cnet reviews on the camera, so I've some what avoided it.

I started leaning towards the a720 because of it's underwater feature, however I'm unsure of how it would actualy preform underwater (with the necesary cover).
A feature that would be neat to have is the flexible, moveable screen like on the powershot a650, but I haven't found any that are sub 200.00, even sub 250.00.
These two features are not deal breakers though... they're just luxuries and not needed.

I am just hoping to get some second opinions, or suggestions. Let me know what you think, or if there is another brand that is also good, it doesn't have to be canon, they just seem to have good cameras with view finders!

I also need something that is durable...
I'm afraid that the A series are plastic, and i'm not sure how durable that is...

In reply to: cont.

I would get the A720 for the extra zoom, but no you would need an underwater case for it to shoot underwater. I wouldn't worry too much about the plastic, you are looking at under $200.
