Question

Choosing a Laptop from the Specs Listed

Jun 1, 2016 6:49PM PDT

I have owned 3 laptops, and not had the best luck in choosing them. So this time around I decided to ask for advice and am very happy to see so many responses to other such posts asking for advice! Happy
I apologize if the post is lengthy, but I tried to get all the info in so there wouldn't need to be many questions for specifics.

The situation is this: I have insurance on my current laptop and I'd like to go to the shop tomorrow or the next day to get the new pc, since it runs out very very soon. The insurance covers anything and everything even if I break it myself. I spoke to them at the store today and they said if I bring in my pc, from the problem I explained, I should be able to get a new laptop on the spot and if I want I can upgrade it by adding the difference from the original price of my current one and the one I want.
With this insurance I am not allowed to upgrade any parts on my own, so I can't swap out the RAM or hard drive for anything better later on. SO what I get is what it will have until I do this upgrade again in a few years.
And I don't live in the US or UK.

I use my pc for surfing the web, Lightroom editing (runs slowly on my current pc), and play a couple of games, but nothing more than Cities Skylines on Steam Workshop and Runescape with the NXT client. This client downloads about 10gb of cache while playing. I don't know much about that stuff, but that's what their homepage says.
As well as I do have a habit of opening tons of tabs in multiple windows and then slowly going through them. I am trying to quit that, though. It seriously slows my pc.

I'll list the specs of the laptops their store has that fit what I am looking for. I need help because

1.I have no idea about different types of graphics cards or types of processors and things. I do know it's best to have dedicated graphics, especially with Lightroom. So I tried to list only those. And I would like an SSD since I have plenty of external memory.

2.I need advice if the specs listed below are enough for the things I use my pc for? And if not, what would you advise to upgrade?

3.I didn't ask them if it's possible to pay a bit extra and get mabye say 16gb RAM instead of 8gb, but I don't really think it is. If it is, would you recommend doing that, since I won't be allowed to do so myself?

4.Is a touch screen worth having if I use the keyboard very often so wouldn't use it as a tablet anyway?

5. I've only ever owned Intel i5 and i7 processors. Is anything else better for what I need? I always hear gamers saying that i7 is best out of all processors for gaming, so I assume it's best.

6. have I just been unlucky or is battery life always less than advertised? This pc was supposed to be 5hrs but actually is less than 2 hrs, right from the day I got it.

All of the options are the same price except nr 2 is 1/8 cheaper, but the price difference between all of these isn't a problem since I only have to pay the difference so it's not that much anyway.

Options:

1. Lenovo Ideapad 700. Specs: i5-6300HQ, 2,3GHz max 3.2GHz. CPU Cache 6 MB, Chipset Intel HM170, 8gb RAM (max 32) DDR4, 256gb SSD drive, Nvidia GeForce GTX 950M dedicated 2gb memory. 1920 x 1080 screen. 4hr battery (probablu 2hrs realistically then)

2. Acer Aspire F5-572G Specs: i5-6200U, 2,3 GHz max 2.8GHz, CPU Cache 3MB, 4gb RAM (max 16) DDR3, 256gb SSD, Nvidia GeForce 920M Dedicated 2gb memory. 1920 x 1080 screen. 5,5hrs batter so around 2 hrs.

3. Toshiba Satellite L50-B-2E7 Spec: i7-5500U (GHz) 2,4 GHz max 3.0, CPU Cache 3 MB, Chipset Intel HM86, 8gb RAM (max16) DDR3, 256gb SSD, Intel HD Graphics 5500 (I guess not dedicated memory). 1366 x 768 screen. 6hr battery (probably 3 hrs realistically)

Thank you so very much to whoever answers Happy

Just adding another option to the list because I only just found it.

Option 4. HP Pavilion 15-ab128no Specs: A10-8780P 2.0 GHz max 3.3 GHz. CPU Cache 2 MB , 8gb RAM DDR3, no upgrade possible since it doesn't say maximum. 256gb SSD, AMD Radeon R7 M360 dedicated 2gb memory. 1920 x 1080 screen , specs don't mention battery life.

Answer
About battery times.
Jun 1, 2016 7:24PM PDT

It's not uncommon to find battery times range from 1.5 hours to 10 hours on a model. For now, we do not use the battery unless there is no choice as we are still getting 300 cycle batteries. If you used it daily you would wear it out in about a year.

I can't find the models you listed so a nod to laptop 1.

Thank you for the reply

Thanks! Yes, those are probably the model names that the pc's have in my country. Probably have a different name in the US or elsewhere.
Thank you, I too was always leaning towards laptop nr1, hence it's placement as nr 1 Happy Only my choices in the past haven't been the best so really appreciate the feedback, thanks! Happy

Answer
Lenovo Ideapad 700 might be better choice
Jun 12, 2016 11:30PM PDT

You won’t use the touchscreen function very often when you are working or playing game. The Lenovo Ideapad 700 might be better choice among options. You could also look at MSI GL series that in the same price band and equipped with mainstream spec such as core i7, GTX graphics and so forth.

I ended up with the Idepad y700
Jun 13, 2016 5:55PM PDT

So in the end I found a sale in a local shop for an even better model than those for about the same price. The Leovo Ideapad Y700 17 inch, it has similar specs to the 700 one I posted about in the original post. I got it just a few hours ago and might be posting soon about a question I have about cooling, but that's for another thread.
Thanks for the help to those who answered Happy

Compared
Jun 14, 2016 7:49PM PDT

The price is just about what I got mine for on sale. Only I don't live in the US, here in norway things are more expensive and so I only have 8gb ram. But everything else is exactly the same as the one I got Happy

Sounds like a deal.

I know the issues of pricing across the world as this is a WWF (world wide forum.)

8GB is pretty spot on for 99% of users today. Don't move for a bit and see how things play out.

Answer
From the spec list you have

From the lists, I would choose Lenovo laptop!
But I will think about MSI laptop as well. I have MSI GE series gaming laptop! It has a decent price and many powerful performances!
