Question

Choosing a laptop Dell versus Asus, maybe considering HP

Apr 5, 2016 1:36PM PDT

I currently own a Toshiba Portege R835 from 2011 that has a mobile sandy bridge processor core i5 processor with integrated graphics and is clocked at 2.3 GHz with 8GB of RAM. I am looking for a new laptop but I’m undecided.

The Dell XPS 13 has had great reviews from Cnet and other tech websites but I’ve heard it has horrible bugs from users. And when testing it out at a store it kept freezing up and getting the not responding spinning circle while browsing the web. I’ve heard in particular the Microsoft precision trackpad and the wifi chip have issues. I like that the Dell is so thin but if it’s full of bugs that is a major concern since I’m looking for something that works. If I get the Dell I would configure it with a touch screen, 8GB of RAM, clock speed up to 2.8 GHz, and Core i5 skylake chip.

I am also considering the Asus Zenbook 303UXUA and the Asus Zenbook 303UXUB. The UA seems fairly similar to what I own and is about the same weight as my current laptop which is 3.4lbs. It comes with, i5 skylake processor, 8GB RAM, integrated graphics, 2.3GHz clock speed. The major difference would be windows 10 and a touch screen. The UB is more powerful since it has 12 GB RAM, an i7 skylake processor, 2.5GHz clock speed, and an NVidia 940 graphics chip but still weighs about 3.2 lbs. I don’t really game that much other than the occasional Sims 3 game, so I’m not sure if the graphics chip is necessary since the UA can be upgraded to 12GB RAM by the user.

And I’m also thinking about the HP Spectre 13 X360 as an option too, which has similar configurations options as the Asus 303UXUA and Dell XPS 13.

Also as a side note I currently have an HDD but all the configurations I’m looking at have SSDs.

In general my computer use is mostly web browsing and word processing. But I am also learning a bit about programming and would like a computer that is able to do that too. I usually have way too many tabs and word documents open so that my computer slows down a lot. This would be my only computer so I need it to be powerful but I don’t want a 15 inch laptop since those computers are generally heavier. I am also concerned about going from a mobile chip to an ultra-low voltage chip would that mean worse ability to multitask?

Here are some links to the computers I'm looking at.

Let me share what I use hours a day.

It's the Lenovo y510p w/16GB RAM, the 4th gen i7 and the GPU is the 750m. I replaced the HDD with some 120 buck 500GB SSD last year. It's very nice and it's of the class machine I want to use for programming.

Of this lot I'd get the i7 with the 740 GPU.

I'm the wrong person to ask about HP. They can't repair in warranty machines and will from my experience ship machines with defect harsher than your touch pad issue. Read http://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/laptop-buying-advice/#post-da7ca992-025a-4773-9086-f1d443e405ef

Answer
GTX950M + SSD

If I were you, I may not limit to GTX940, which is rear now, and I may start from GTX950M. It is gradually becoming the base line of a common use laptop. So when I looked at GTX950M+SSD, there are actually Sager and MSI for the majority in Amazon. If you are open for other brands than just ASUS, MSI and Sager could be the options. FYI~
