Choosing a college ultraportable

I'm looking for a ~12" ultraportable with >4 hours battery life on WiFi, with a sizable multitouch trackpad that isn't known for any problems and ideally an optical drive. durability is important. budget ~$1200. big-name like HP, Dell, Lenovo preferred.

Can someone offer suggestions, even if it doesn't meet my loose criteria? The big thing I'm running into is that these manufacturers suck at making good trackpads. When I finally find one that looks good and big, like on the HP ENVY series, it turns out the trackpad drivers are horrible so what's the point.

That really is the lowest i'll go on battery life though.

Many thanks!

Oh, and I really like the trackpad & keyboard of Macbooks and Macbook Pros. But I'm not considering a Mac.

Would be to Dell's sales lines, and such and put the question directly to them. There are the laptop choosers at the top of the forum if you want to search on your own but given your good criteria why would you not call them up now?

PS. Just so you know there are no shopper help staff here. Some thought this forum was staffed.
