But backup what you don't want to lose before its gone. Today's drives only show bad sectors when the drive has run out of spare sectors. So it's time.

Ok my system started freezing when using the hard drive with the hard drive light on so I decided to run a chkdsk.
I ran it and it took about 15 min to complete which I thought was pretty fast for a 500gb drive with 400+ used. It found some bad sectors and repaired some.
The next day I forgot I scheduled a dskchk again and its running right now.
Currently 1 hr 20 min in, its running extremely slow. Its on step 4 of 5 (verifying file data) its moving past like 10 files every 10 min.
I'm fairly sure it may take all day and night if I let it continue. Can I just turn my system off? What are the risks?
I'm going to check the smart in bios the next time I get a chance. At this point I'm almost 100% sure I need a new hdd.
Any suggestions?
