I am considering purchasing an external drive for temp. storage. I wasn't aware that their was an issue with the utilities.
"Ignorance is bliss", until reality strikes.
In the discussion http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-7588-0.html?forumID=70&threadID=29952&messageID=340788&tag= I noted that I've run into many USB 2.0 hard disks that I couldn't run CHKDSK on. Error Checking didn't work either and I was "concerned".
I can't find in the huge pile of issues that SP2 solved where Microsoft may have noted this, but the good news is that on the few XP SP2 machines I've tried the USB 2.0 enclosures on, the issue appears to have been fixed.
CHKDSK, DEFRAG, ERROR CHECKING and DISK Defragment all function fine now.
