chkdsk freezes everytime at stage 5, 56%

Nov 15, 2009 10:25PM PST

I own a toshiba satellite L355 laptop, windows vista home basic operating system. When deleting norton 360 it deleted my dvd drive. I went to microsoft support selected fix it for me. Fixed the dvd drive but ever since then chkdsk has been freezing at stage 5 at 56%. I ran pc diagnostics and for some some reason it skips the dvd drive even though i have it selected.

Try safe mode next time. About the dvd check. I don't have your product manual and they may not tell but most of the time the test required a DATA DVD for the test. Other times I've had it use some DVDRW or CDRW disc.

safe mode froze too

i booted in safe mode and when loading the drivers it froze up at avg driver so i did a manual shut. From there i had to go into windows recovery and repair start up files for windows to even load. Ive heard of some problems with AVG internet security and windows vista home basic service pack 2 dont know if that has anything to do with it since it did freeze at the avg driver.

I had the same issue with CHKDSK hanging while switching from OneCare to MS Security Essentials. Turns out it is just taking a long time to do its thing. Mine booted cleanly in under an hour. Not what I wanted, but glad I didn't try to fix something that wasn't broken
