China vows to curb junk e-mail

Feb 3, 2004 12:35PM PST

The Chinese ministries of public security, education, and information industry will begin combating spam e-mails, warning that such messages may be subversive. The Chinese Police Daily reports that 70 million spams were sent to Chinese Internet users everyday in 2003, many containing pornography, anti-communist messages, and anti-government material. The ministries have called for 90% of the nation's e-mail servers to have antispam measures installed by the end of June 2004. China has nearly 80 million Internet users.
