CHILDREN?S HOSPITAL SAN DIEGO MOVIE THEATHER

Nov 1, 2006 11:02PM PST

After a life saving surgery, my 10 year old daughter was cooped up in Children?s Hospital and wanted to go to the movies. Children?s Hospital has play rooms on each floor for about 20 kids. Volunteers amuse the kids with arts and crafts, magician shows, face painting etc. No one has ever thought of a movie theater experience for these kids. Block Buster will give the Hospital the latest movies and a group in LA has offered to bring current movies too. My daughter?s idea has lead to her auctioning beaded jewelry she created (http://blog.juchafamily.com click her picture) to raise money for equipment for these room to create a Movie level experience for the kids cooped up in the hospital.

I have taken on the task of building a rolling lockable cart to be used from room to room. Each room will have a pull down screen, so all a volunteer needs to do is roll the cart into the room, plug in an extension cord and show the movie. The cart will have a projector on top, DVD, VHS, surround sound amplifier and speakers in the cabinet below.

I have run into a problem with the speakers, as Children?s Hospital does not want wires running from the cart to portable speakers in front of the room. This requires the speakers to be mounted on (or in) the cart. In order to project a large image on the screen, the cart must be in the back of the room. The sound (using surround sound speakers) is behind the kids. I think this will peculiar as images will be talking on the screen, but their voices will be coming from behind the kids.

Does anyone know of a projector that can be placed in the front of the room, close to the screen, that will produce a large movie (16:2) image with a severe tilt on the projector?
Or of a way to project the sound to the front of the room (wireless speakers cannot be used in the hospital) if the speakers on mounted to the cart?

Thanks for any ideas you may have.
Myron

Just some thoughts.

The projector would work in the play room, have a movie hour(s) for the kids that can leave their rooms.
For the ones that can't, maybe a LCD or DLP-RP would work better. Then you could but the cart at the foot of the bed and the speakers their also. John

Portable DVD's

Thank for responding. For kids who cannot leave the beds we are providing portable DVD players. Most of the kids on the floors with playrooms are able to walk around the floor. Kids on other floors (ICU) will be able to watch the movie on the portable DVD when possible.
Thanks again
