Childhood outdoor games.

Now I know this will vary by country, but How many remember "bat and catty" "give a holler" I thought for years it was give a hollow. Another was "stroke the bunny", no rude comments please.
Another one was "kick the can."

Anybody know any variants on these games? I'm talking early 1960s.

basic, pickup equipment, then you mean stickball. It's the urban street version of baseball. Never played it, but I'm told it has its own rules, taken as seriously as in the pros.
We played street hockey. When the snowfall was heavy enough it would build up on residential streets so that we could slide around in our winter boots, like skating. Dave Haney, the hockey fanatic among us, built a regulation goal out of wood, which could be pushed aside for [rare] traffic.

If I recall correctly, we'd divide into two groups opposing one another. One group would form a line, lock arms and shout something like "Red Rover, Red Rover, send Billy right over" The name inserted would be a person on the opposing team. Billy would attempt to run though the locked arms of two of the opponents. What I've forgotten is if or how any score was kept. Of course there was also mumbly-peg but most carried pocket knives back then. We did play "kick the can" but I don't remember if there were any rules. Mostly it was spontaneous and chaotic often ending with bad tempers and, if on the school playground, kids having the teachers grab them by the ears and take them inside.

Today, and along with their parents, they're heads are hung low looking into smart phone screens for a good portion of the day. They only know the sky and their surroundings as an annoying reflection in those screens.

(NT) What is this "sky" of which you speak?
