Checking if Genuine

Jul 24, 2007 8:19PM PDT

I am trying to clean up my grandma's computer.
In the process, I want to update Windows XP to its latest version using Windows Update. I know that they check if it is a genuine version when you do updates.
The problem is, my grandmother has no idea wether it's legal. Some guy sold it to her, and I can't find the guy.

My question is, if I try to update Windows and it is indeed not original, will my computer lock itself? Or will it just prevent me from doing updates?
Or, is there another way to check if my windows is legal, before using the official Windows Update?

Thanks

Nothing bad will happen. It'll either verify or it won't.

The thing is

If your grandmother's computer has a non-genuine Windows XP installed then that is illegal and she should not be using it.

Harsh words I know, and it would be very sad for your grandmother if this is the case, but that is the position she may find herself in.

As Wayne says, checking whether the OS is genuine or not is painless. If it is not genuine, then she will receive an annoying nag window telling her it is non-genuine and she will be prohibited from receiving further Windows updates except the critical and security updates.

There is no harm in going through the process, and if the OS is non-genuine, then it is time to purchase a genuine version.

Check it here

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

start diagnostic

fix all issues first

then validate it.

If it's not a Genuine version, you'll know it. If NOT then you'll have to purchase a Genuine version.
