Check Fan 1 msg after Firmware update

Mar 12, 2009 4:00PM PDT

Hi
I updated the LCD TV LA40A680 to a new firmware and now I get a message Check Fan 1. The TV shuts off after several minutes. I'm sure I can here a fan running. Is there a way to tell the TV to ignore the fan message?
Any ideas?

Thanks

Joy! but I don't think thats the correct model
Mar 18, 2009 3:59PM PDT

Hooray! That has made things much better but I don't think Pearl_P1 is the correct model.
It's just that some of the menu items are missing, these items were there when the TV was new.
Example: go into tools and you should have the picture size as an option. Also from the picture menu it has Movie Plus, that's for the 650 models not the 680. I think our 680 should have something like Motion flow.
If we could just get a screen shot of the correct settings for our exact model then I'm sure we could tidy it all up.
How can we find the correct model and NZ settings?
Any ideas?

yeah

Have you got a tv shop near you? Could go into one with your remote and then check out what the settings are! That's the only way I can think of unless we can get someone else online with the same model to take a photo of the settings.

I'll ask the support guys tomorrow if they ring me back.

So close.

That sounds good.
I think our 2 best bets are either to get the information from Samsung? That could be much harder than it sounds. Or as you said, maybe someone online will be able to take a photo or jot down the settings.
Not sure about going into a TV shop though, I could see that going horribly wrong.

Moogler, Thanks for getting us this far. I'll let you know how I get on.

Also a big thanks to The_Pickel. You have been a great help and I can't tell you how much I have appreciated your thoughts and comments. The TVs are almost back to normal. We have made significant progress using the NZ firmware supplied to us from Samsung. We installed it, change a couple of settings such as model type and country (thanks for those ideas) and now we don't have the check fan 1 error. We also can now view our digital channels. I think the model we selected "Pearl_P1" isn't the actual model though but I'm sure we are almost there. Hopefully to tidy things up all we need to do is find the correct settings.

great success!

w00t "Diamonds" seems to be the magic model! not only no CHeck Fan 1 warning, but also we get 100MHz Motion Plus in the video options instead of the movie plus Happy

Resets
Mar 18, 2009 6:35PM PDT

Great work. I'll change mine over to Diamonds soon.

It may still pay to see if we can find the exact settings for the 680 model. Like you said earlier, who knows what other settings we may need to change.

I haven't tried Diamonds yet but I have noticed the sound isn't all that great since the AU firmware. What's the TV sound like for you now?

Have you tried all of the models?

The box the TV came in has Crystal Design on it but I can't see that in the model menu. It may refer to the cosmetic look of the TV rather than the inner workings.
Have you tried any of the resets. I noticed a country reset on the right had side of the menu.

I just tried setting it to Diamonds but turned it back to Pearl_P1. I don't think all of the HDMI inputs were working? Are they all working for you on Diamonds.

Its not Diamonds
Mar 18, 2009 6:49PM PDT

I'm almost positive that Diamonds is not our model. It has an option for LED in the picture menu which is clearly not us. Also HDMI input 1 won't work, haven't tried the others.
I hope we can find the correct settings tomorrow and have it all sorted for the weekend.

Thanks for keeping me up to date.

moonstone
Mar 18, 2009 6:59PM PDT

right you are! I just tried playing a movie from my laptop and no hdmi signal found Sad I, went through most of the models until I got to moonstone.

Moonstone has 100hz motion plus in the picture options and HDMI works.

For sound I did notice the other ones wasn't as good. I think moonstone fixes it, however I usually have my sound going out through a surround sound system so don't really use the built in speakers.

Fingers crossed this is the final solution! But I will still try and get a list of settings from either samsung (who gave us the blimmin firmware and should have known it'd need some tweaking before it worked) or from the support guys if they're nice enough to help out Happy

This list may help a little
Mar 19, 2009 5:27AM PDT

After your sugestion I changed to Moonstone and it is definitely the closest so far.
I found the below list of 40" models from a UK site. If its anything to go by we can rule out some models based on number of HDMI inputs and contrast ratios. It's either Amber or Moonstone. I would have said Ruby but the Check Fan error is kind of annoying (ha-ha). It may be possible that Ruby is correct but another setting must also be changed to correct the Fan msg. There is a Type option from the menu that includes several 40" types. I would not change that setting unless you knew 100% what to change it to!
I believe our model has a 60K to 1 contrast ratio and none on the list match that.
You know I still think that we should have seen Crystal as a model option?
Anyway, good luck today. Happy

Great News! I have a screen shot of the 680
Mar 19, 2009 10:32AM PDT

I have a screen shot of the 680 settings. All I can confirm at the moement is that it is Moonstone. Can't remember the rest but I can forward you the image. I'll just need some way to do this.
Can you think of a way to get you the image?

Fantastic!
Mar 19, 2009 10:58AM PDT

That's fantastic news! I have also had a call from the tech guys who said if we used the a650 firmware from samsung.com we'd be ok.

I'm happy enough with just setting the model to moonstone though!

Hmm, screenshots! cnet doesn't allow you to post them eh... How about putting it up on flikr and posting a link, or creating a new topic on http://www.avsforum.com as I think they allow pictures to be pasted in?

It'd be a good reference for any others that find themselves in a similar situation (I'm sure we can't be the only two that have done this!)

Image uploaded to Flickr
Mar 19, 2009 3:09PM PDT

The image with the settings has been uploaded to flickr. The pic was taken from a NZ LA40A680M1M that has the original firmware on it.

If that link doesn't work then search for LA40A680

I won't have a chance to change to compare my settings tonight. Let me know how you get on.
Good luck Happy

Settings
Mar 19, 2009 6:18PM PDT

Have you changed any settings?
I can only see a difference in 'CH Table' and 'DDR'. Store Demo isn't an issue.
Do you think these should be changed to match the image?

- Collapse -
tried them
Mar 19, 2009 8:09PM PDT

Well I tried the CH Table and DDR. I had to rescan the digital channels. But it didn't seem to look as good, so I switched it back to how we had it before.

I suppose if we find out what the DDR and CH Table do we could made an educated choice, but until then I'm happy with how it is now.

Thanks for your help
Mar 20, 2009 6:35AM PDT

OK. I'll leave mine as they are. To confirm mine are as follows:

CH TABLE = SUWON
DDR = SAMSUNG

Is that what yours is set to?
Did you have to change anything else?
I have tried searching the net for an explanation of CH TABLE and DDR values but have found nothing that helps.
DDR is a ram type. CH TABLE?
