Cheap coffee urn

Feb 8, 2010 1:10PM PST

I got a camping type coffee pot just in case the electricity went out. I tried it(on fire place) in order to be sure to make a good pot. Well, that idea didn't last long. The darn hinge came right off. I can still use it but after 1 use, it broke. I'll take it back in a couple of days. Next time, I'll buy the snug lid type. I'm peeved because basically all the camping cook gear is from China(I did check). I think only the ironware wasn't(Lodge). The pot I brought was the blue enamel type. Anyways, just had to vent. -----Willy Happy

good quality stuff on Ebay

I've picked up and gifted some really great condition Griswold old iron from there. I strip it down with Easy Off, then clean and re-season it. My complaint about Lodge is the inside of their pans aren't ground smooth like the better quality older iron.

Ironware
Feb 8, 2010 10:16PM PST

Heck, if you want to see some decent and probably used ironware, checkout the http://www.shopgoodwill.com online. The kitchenware section has a constant supply of ironware of all sorts. The only problem besides winning the bid is the s/h cost for "ironware". Happy
Alas, besides Lodge and Griswald, there are decent Korean ironware that seems better than the Chinese stuff. As for smooth surface, I think its the quality of fine sand used makes the big difference. AND yes, they do get the very old #'s of ironware, but I'm into all that other than a simple fry pan or flat griddle. I like to visit the website if for anything just to view what gets put there. adios -----Willy Happy

...to give as wedding presents at times, after making them look like new, and giving some printed material on older Griswold ware. Start a whole new generation off appreciating the pan that cooks anything, lol.

Ok...

Angeline, I plan to go to Bass Pro and check out the Coleman models. I did find Amazon carries them too. I don't need a too large cup capacity, like only 8-10 cup will do. My fireplace will be the place to put it on the flat portion and let it perk away, no open flame. That way, I have coffee or cinnamon tea(any tea) if and when the power goes out. Thanks -----Willy

I didn't want to spend too much. That's why I got burned on this cheap one I did get. I figured for the little use I planned for it wouldn't be too bad in the long run. Funds are tight around here lately due to real estate taxes and all. Heck, I don't fill-up my tank as much anymore. adios -----Willy Happy

Ask if the "camp pot"... and a cheap alternative
Feb 9, 2010 10:28PM PST

....... is intended for use over a fire, or just over a camp stove.

During one ice storm , out of desperation, we heated water in the fireplace, and made instant coffee.

(Heated the water in an iron skillet n the coals. It didn't need to boil, just get "drinking hot".)

It will do in a pinch.

I miss Yellow Front stores!
Feb 9, 2010 1:56AM PST

We used to get all of our camping gear from them. We had a blue enamel coffee pot that we used for years, made cowboy coffee in that pot forever, Almost! I finally burnt the bottom out of it! Just a hint, to settle the grounds just drop in an ice cube and wait a few minutesHappy
