Charter news server down

Sep 1, 2009 1:50AM PDT

I have Charter as my cable and Internet provider. Starting yesterday, their news server 'news.charter.net' stopped accepting connections with the error

502 Access Denied (Connection Limit Reached)
(newsfe17.iad) (Tornado v1.2.7.560-2)

I called Charter. They say that they provide newsgroup service but don't support it. They also insisted the problem was on my end and that I should call the company who writes my newsreader and then call "Mac". (Did they mean I should call Apple because of a problem with their news server?)

Is anyone else having a similar problem with the Charter news server?

Paul

Common . . .

Most ISPs are removing news servers. In fact, AT&T, Comcast, Time Warner, etc. have stopped providing news servers.

Their rationale is because of child porn, they no longer support news servers. Good for them.

The Charter news server is once again working.

I assume you were joking when you said it was good that some ISPs are dropping newsgroups because they contain child pornography. With that logic, they should disallow web browsing, too, because you can get to child pornography that way too.

At least someone finally realized something was broken. I was not going to be happy if I had to pay a monthly fee on top of my Charter bill for newsgroup access.
