charter communication pipeline // change my ip address?

May 10, 2005 11:18AM PDT

Hello everyone, l've got charter pipeline high speed internet service on a windows xp SP2 machine. In any event l'm trying to figure out how to change my static ip address. If anyone could give me some tips hints on how this would be done, it would be GREATLY appreciated. I've searched both google, and msn but haven't found anything of relevance other than the following document:
http://charterpipelinentx.net/ipaddress.htm

which states:
"Your public IP address with Charter Pipeline is not a static address but is dynamic and will change from time to time. It will also change if you connect your modem to a different adapter."

And l don't quite understand what the author means by "different adapter".

If anyone could help me figure out how to change my IP address with charter highspeed l'd greatly appreciate it. I know l've done it before, but l just can't seem to remember how.

I've tried running the command:
ipconfig/release
ipconfig/renew
but l get the same ip address every time.

Thanks...

Hardware MAC address

You get the same IP every time because the MAC address of your ethernet adapter is still the same. The DHCP server recognizes it as the same piece of equipment and give the same IP. With most routers, you can change its MAC very easily, but PCI adapters usually don't support this. There isn't much you can do, other than get a router or change the ethernet card. Or you can wait, but that'll a while, a long while.
