Character map

Mar 12, 2004 1:00PM PST

I need help with the character map in XP. I know I can copy and paste a symbol from there into my document and I also know I can use the keypad to key in the symbol like ALT plus 0169 will give me the copy right symbol or what ever. What about symbols that don't just have a number. For example there is a font called symbol and it has a cloverleaf I would like to use. The character code says 0xA7 so how can you key that in instead of pasting? There are others that say codes like U+00AA and I don't understand how to key them in or if you can, Mary!

The short answer is that in Word or the application, not only must you select the character, but what font it is.

I don't think you understood my question. When I go to system tools and character map I know I can copy and paste the symbol or use the kepad to key it in but what about the ones that have a keycode that says U+00AA or 0xA7. How would you key that in? When I am in AOL mail or wordpad or what ever I have no problem doing alt plus 0169 to get

In short, not only must you copy in the character which for years on the PC was just an 8 bit number, but in word you have to select the font to use as well.

If you do select, say DINGBATS and type alt plus 0169, you may not get the same character. Practice this with the other FONTS.

You may have thought it works, but just didn't have the wrong font selected in Word. For UNICODE, the methods change. "To enter Unicode decimal values, you have to prefix the number with a 0 (zero). E.g. ALT+0163 is the pound sign ("

Thanks for the link. I can see it's not as simple as when I was using Windows 98. I did find though with the copyright symbol that it doesn't matter about having the font selected but I only tested this in wordperfect, wordpad and AOL mail. In each application I left the font that was there and did alt plus 0169 and got the right symbol but that is probaly a common one and other ones I realize will not work like that. The copy and paste won't work in AOL mail and I am trying to make shamrocks for a board siggy on AOL, you can't use regular graphics in the board posts. When I have write mail open I checked the wigdings font and such and didn't see one and I was sure when I was playing around once I saw one. Actually I found one that's an outline but I wanted one that's filled in so I checked the character map and found one but it won't copy and paste to AOL mail. Was always able to use any from the character map in AOL mail when I was on 98 no problems. Thanks for the help will read that site to better understand.
