Changing size of text in websites

Dec 2, 2004 12:38AM PST

When I go to Fidelity.com in Firefox, the text is just the size I want it. But when I use IE6, it is too large so that I have to scroll to see everything, and so that sometimes the words overlap.

Using View>Size doesn't do anything and I can't recall what procedure I go through to remedy this. It seems like there are a number of way to deal with different kinds of size problems but I can't recall what they are.

use your mouse

press the CTRL key and move the wheel on the mouse up or down a notch to change it to what you want. Be aware though that this will affect every page you go to from now on, but it can again be a simple fix if you need it by doing this process again at the next site.

Boy, Toni, that works great when I'm using Firefox but doesn't seem to work when I'm using IE. On one page, there were a couple of asteriks that changed size in IE but not the letters. Should it also work in IE? grandpaw? If not, what would be the alternative for IE? Thanks, grandpaw

It should work on your's as well. I've tried it on Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and IE 6 SP2 on Windows XP and Windows 2000.

Hope this helps.

Correction, it works everywhere I've gone
Dec 2, 2004 3:00AM PST

Toni, now it's working on both browsers on different websites I have gone to. I don't know why I had a problem before but it seems to have gone away. I really like that method. Thanks, grandpaw

Re: Confused here!

Hi Toni.

I'm confused.

I'm using Firefox at the moment. When I press and hold down CTRL and move my mouse wheel, what is supposed to happen?

Nothing on mine. But when Ipress and hold down on the mousewheel, (no CTRL key), I get a slow smooth scrolling of the page. I never knew it did that.

Am I deprived of something here?

I've always been deprived. That's DEPRIVED, not depraved, Happy

Ahh, one other thing. What does [NT] mean in a subject line?

Mark,

The [NT] in the subject line of these forum topics means "No Text". In other words, there is no text in the subject box. (Unless the user made a mistake and accidently typed a subject, then pressed the Preview button, then went back to type in text. In that case, the NT will have been added by the software and must be removed manually prior to submitted the response message.)

ON this machine, using the Firefox 1.0 browser, when I hold down the "Ctrl" key, then scroll the wheel, the text on the page gets larger or smaller depending on the scroll direction. It does the same in Internet Explorer.

Hope this helps.

Hi Griff,

I finally got back here, There's a lot of new threads everyday and if I miss a day, I lose track!

Thanks for the [NT] info. That always confused me, Happy

Weird about the scroll wheel. Mine "still" only smooth scrolls pages in browsers when I hold down CTRL and click and drag the mouse wheel. I assume I have it set that way, but in Control Panel > Mouse, I see no other settings for CTRL+Mouse wheel.

I've just found on my browsers, if I hold down CTRL and click the number pad "+" key, my text will increase. "-" decreases of course.

Interesting, but thanks anyway and I am quite happy to leave my mouse as it is.

Toni (or anybody): do you have any idea why Control>Mouse doesn't change the text size in IE when I have Hotmail opened up, nor when I have the ATT homepage opened up. Otherwise, the text size in the other websites I have gone to does change in both IE and Firefox. Control>Mouse does change the text size in both of those websites when I am in Firefox. I think I am recalling right that at one point Control>Mouse did change the hotmail size when I got there in IE, but not now. grandpaw

Some pages have font attributes set...

in style sheets.

If you want to be able to control fonts on all sites you will have to change some preferences.

In MSIE open the Tools menu then select Internet Options. Now select the General tab and click the Accessibility buttom at the bottom of the page. Place a check in the "Ignore font sizes..." checkbox. Apply the change and OK your way back to the desktop.

The mouse or the menu should both work to change font size now.

Edward, somehow I overlooked your post. I just now did as you suggested and now find that I can change the text size when I have Hotmail in IE6.
