Changing SD card from read only

Thanks for your response, the card is unlocked and I did try it in the locked position in case it may have been labelled wrong. The camera gave me a "card is locked" message when I tried this. Any other ideas, it seems to work in my PDA.

If you have written on the card with some other device, your camera may not like that.

A memory card should always be formatted with the camera when it is first installed, or when it has been used on some other device.

Check you camera User Manual and find how to format the memory card.

If the camera will not let you format the card, you need to use a card reader attached to your computer and delete all files and folders on the card. The camera should then let you format the card.

Note: a format will remove all data on the card.

We just bought dx6490 and e are having the same problem to ou find a way to rectify this? We are all out of ideas, help would be greatly appreciated!

I've tried the switch(first thing i thought of), i formatted the card in a card reader then placed in the camera and nothing. I tried placing a piece of tape over the switch just in case it's sliding when being placed into the camera to no avail. And last but not least i went out and purchased a SanDisk 256MB SD card and right out of the package it did the exact same thing. Both cards work fine in my card reader for my laptop (read, write, format, etc..) so i'm at a loss as to what to try next.

I own a dx6490. Last hurrah is to format it in the camera but if not, then it's time to ask Kodak "How much?"

Will call kodak monday then the person i bought it from to see if they'll refund the price of the cam + $60 in brokerage/customs fees i paid out!

The OP never did do what snapshot recommended and that was to format the card using the camera, not the computer.

I don't doubt it at all. In my experience, if I use the expansion card directly with my PC, they have not only been rendered READ-ONLY but they are permanently locked (this was after SP2 or SP3 XP). Afterwards quite mysteriously, they will work with transferring data between PC and card but will not accept data transfer via Palm software. I contacted tech support at Palm and after approximately two hours of rebooting, reinstalling, fresh hard resets, reformatting cards, etc., the cards were still READ-ONLY and locked that way. It smacks of M$ if you ask me. the file structure if FAT, who created FAT? Cards don't elect to make themselves READ-ONLY. Someone flips the switch. I don't think its Palm.

I know that this is not exactly associated with the camera issue. What I do know is that there is a relationship between using expansion cards (SDs) with a camera or PDA that change their file I/O permissions when the expansion card is used directly with a PC. I think as long as the expansion card is not used as a logical drive with direct access by XP (and probably Vista), the locking shouldn't occur.
