Question

Changing IP

Dec 4, 2015 11:03AM PST

I am using a macbook pro, and I have trouble changing the IP address. I know how, but when I do my internet doesn't work. It says I am connected to the internet but when I actually try to load a web page it doesn't work. No error message. The purpose of changing my ip is so that i can play video games with my friend using the same network. The funny thing is, when I go to my friends house 5 of us can play on his wifi at a time. However, when we go to my house it doesn't work. My internet is also 100mbps while his is 6mbps. Odd. Help anyone? One more thing: When me and my friend play at my house we can play on different servers but not the same ones. We are trying to play TF2 at my house but when we go to my friends house we play Starcraft. Thanks.

Answer
Well, in short no.

It's like changing your mailbox address and getting no mail.

But I don't have enough detail about your setup. Older routers didn't have more than the native NAT firewall (sorry if you feel shortchanged about this) and newer routers I have to turn off the firewall at times. So look at both places networks and what's different?

I am sorry I am completely ignorant when it comes to these matters. I have a counter in my basement that was installed within the past six months and a router that i believe is there to "extend" the signal of the first router? I am not sure what I am supposed to look at. Thanks.

Sorry about that.

Since you don't know what you have or it's setup then it's not possible for me to guess what's up. We do know that 2 routers in series create all sorts of support issues. I NEVER deploy such a thing. I might use a "router as a WAP" but that's it.

Time to talk to those that installed this to come out and fix it.

*router, not counter
