Question

Changing IP Address

Apr 4, 2016 1:42AM PDT

Hi all,
We have 2 computers at home. The main laptop and printer is connected via DSL or wireless to our modem and has a static IP address from our ISP and can't be changed to a rotating IP.
My question is that my laptop connects wireless to the modem but can I can my IP address every so often with affecting the static IP??

If you use DHCP on your laptop, it gets the IP-address from the modem. You can't change the algorithm that the modem uses.
You can assign a fixed IP-address if you wish. But why should you?

I heard there are special tools for changing IP address, or for fixing it, but frankly speaking I have no idea what can I use it for.

If one computer is static, and connects without an issue, then I would check that computers IP address. Write down the numbers past the last dot of that address. Now go to the other computer and open its network settings and set it to static. Set the IP Address to exactly the same as the other computer but change the last numbers that you wrote down to one more than the number. So if your static computer is 192.168.0.2, change the other computer to 192.168.0.3. This is not an ideal setup for a larger network, but for two computers it should work fine. Happy
