Well, first you have to get in

You will need to hit a specific key during the POST (power on self test). This varies from motherboard to motherboard but us usually F1 or Esc. Often you see a message telling you to Hit ??? to enter Setup. You'll be presented with a menu of options. You will need to know what you want to change, select the desired option and escape selecting the option to change your changes. The PC will then reboot. It's good to have a goal before doing this.

Are you updating to a new version or changing the settings? If you don't know how to get into the BIOS, you really don't want to mess with the settings.

Changing the BIOS

First, I agree with ITnewb...this is not exactly something you want to just dive into. Editing the wrong settings can have serious consequences. However, if you wish to proceed...

Here is a list of the bootkeys for each model of computer...as Steve said, it varies. Then, of course, a graphical guide might help the process along a little bit.

As for updating to the latest version, go to your computer manufacture's website under the support section and look for BIOS updates. MAKE SURE that the one you download and install is for your current operating system and that they match your computer model. Not doing so may leave your computer in an unusable state. Then just follow the instructions they give to complete the installation process...all after backing up your data, just in case something goes wrong in the process.

Hope this helps,
John
