Open it up and look.

You'll have to do that to change the CPU anyway. What you need to check is if the CPU is in a socket or is soldered onto the mainboard. If soldered, it's still possible to change but has yet to be done since the costs of doing so is more than the laptop.

You can take it out

Its not glued to the motherboard, i can take it out by itself. But if i get a new CPU do i have to change anything else? or do i have to change anything in the bios?

Next up.

If the same model was offered with the other CPU, that's your best clue. Now match up the pin counts (370, 478, etc. pins.) Also check the maker for latest BIOS.

Be sure to check the MECHANICALS to see that the heatsinks will work out. www.intel.com has PDF documents on just about all their CPUs.

Sounds like you'll be the rare exception to the no-change rule.

OK< WHATS NEXT??

Yes, gateway does offer the m320 model with a Pentium M CPU, I think that this mission is a go... But the only thing im worried about is that i have the latest Bios from the gateway support website. If i put in the pentium M CPU what am i going to have to do to the BIOS?

Thank you

I now ask you to don't do this.

If telling you to check the BIOS version and use the latest is not enough, give yourself more time to learn about PCs in general.

You'll catch up soon.

New problems
Nov 13, 2005 3:59AM PST

I have gone to gateways website and checked for the latest bios, currently i have the most up to date bios running on my system. The new problem that has come up for me is the heatsink. Will the heatsink that is currently on my laptop work with the new pentium M CPU?

Intel.com and your research.
Nov 13, 2005 4:23AM PST

Over at intel.com are the PDF mechanical drawings of your old CPU and your new CPU.

YOU get to research if there is some change in size. I will not do this for you.

Thanks?

I know i can go to intel.com, I dont need you to do my research, maybe someone know about this from past experience....

The CPU form/height can change.

That's why we go get the mechanical drawings and compare.

Done too many to count now, just not yours.

Pentium M heat
Nov 13, 2005 4:53AM PST

Does the pentium M run hotter or cooler than a celeron m cpu?

That's at intel.com

Get the electrical PDF from Intel.com and it will specify the Watts of old and your new CPU. Then you'll know.;

Do i look at the clock speed or at the front side bus
