changed memory, from 256 to 512 now pc wont recognize memory

May 19, 2007 9:10AM PDT

I recently put in a new memory stick, went from 128 stick and 256 stick to one 512 stick. The PC now would not boot up with the 512 and so I put the others back in...now with the two in there it only recognizes 96 ram of memory. I have xp and a Celeron 1.70 Ghz processor. What happened and what to do to get it working with either a 512 or 2 of the 256 sticks?

disconnect the power cord from the back of it?

Also if laptop, did you also remove the battery?

There's always power to the MB on a desktop PC MB unless

you (1) unplug the PC from the AC power or (2) switch the PC off at the PS switch (if so equipped).

Good Luck

For the computer

to find and recognize the memory, you have to have it unplugged. This will de-energize it and will tell it to look for new items.

I did unplug it ....later

I carried it to our IT guy at work and he reconnected it after adding the 512 mem stick and it still didnt work. It would give at series of 3 beeps when it powered up, but would never boot up. Suggestions?

does it work if you reinstall the old RAM ????

VAPCMD

it does but

It only reads 96 mb ram of the 128+256 that I put back in from the original setup.

yes

I tried each one singly and separately. The only one that will work is the 128 RAM and it only shows to have 96 installed. There is the 256 with it tho, not sure it would matter/

(NT) and you've tried the old DIMMs in different slots ?

Yes and no go.

I think the link you listed about the mother board gives me some info. It is the 3rd mother board pictured there on the far right.
Could it be the TYPE OF RAM that is the problem? If so, what do I need to do to fix it ???

Really need you to recheck the MB for the model # and
May 20, 2007 8:04AM PDT

confirm what CPUZ says....without the right info....we can't help much

The manual for the Shuttle MV43PN motherboard indicates it accepts two different types of RAM ....they're NOT interchangeable and you probably need to use either the 168pin OR the 184pin DIMMs (this means only ONE OR THE OTHER...NOT BOTH). The manual also show a jumper for DRAM voltage 3.3V for the 168 pin DRAM and 2.5 for the 184pin DDR.

I have tried every configuration of them. I was told that the placement of the RAM in the 4 slot configuration makes a difference. Does it? I have the one with 4 slots.

What computer model?
May 19, 2007 11:17AM PDT

Tell us what computer model you have.
If this is a home-built computer, tell us the motherboard model.

If you need a utility to learn your motherboard manufacturer and model number, download and run CPU-Z.

I put the orig RAM back in and finally got it to work, only recognizing 96 mb ram and so after I read the info on the motherboard, I put in the ram it said to use and it would not boot up with that ... put the orig 128/256 RAM back in and now it just brings up the black screen that says motherboard and cpu info and that it is checking NVDRAM and never goes further than that screen!!!! Do I just need a new pc or what?

Sounds like the RAM socket has gone bad.
May 23, 2007 10:13PM PDT

Do these memory sticks work ok in another machine?

Bob

not sure
May 23, 2007 11:00PM PDT

They are possibly bad, tho I just bought them about 4 months ago. I put the orig 2 in that worked fine (tho very slow) last night and now all I get is the black screen at first power.

- Collapse -
That's why the sockets are now suspect.
May 23, 2007 11:09PM PDT

Try a different mainboard.

Another mainboard.
May 23, 2007 11:23PM PDT

Today's technicians rarely have the solder skills to replace such. Or the costs involved are higher than the new board.

Any suggestions on one that is easy to install and reliable...I am not the most knowledgable of this stuff....

They all seem the same to me. Maybe you should start a new discussion about "I want to replace my motherboard."

Ask what others may suggest and tell if you are going to recycle anything.

Try...
May 23, 2007 11:39PM PDT

Get your hands on an old toothbrush and some rubbing alcohol and dip the brush in alcohol then brush clean the ram slots. Blow dry or allow to dry before use. While that's drying, use a clean cloth dipped in alcohol and/or good electrical contact cleaner and clean the ram modules contacts. Now retry installing ram check results. If this remains faulty then as Robert mentioned a possible ram slot(s) has got bad or its solder runs are crappy. If none of this resolves the problem, replace mtrbd. as anything else is far beyond typical repair or worth the effort if unskilled.
